Imported Silk from India

Here at DrapeStyle, we sell more silk drapes than anything else. You won’t find better quality silk and exclusive colors anywhere. Our designers are often asked questions about our silk fabrics. Here are a few facts about this stunning natural fabric:

  • Because of its natural protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics
  • An all-climate fabric, it is warm and cozy in winter and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Its natural temperature-regulating properties give silk this paradoxical ability to cool and warm simultaneously. Silk garments outperform other fabrics in both summer and winter. Worn as a second layer, it warms without being bulky
  • In spite of its delicate appearance, it is relatively robust and its smooth surface resists soil and odors well
  • While silk abrasion resistance is moderate, it is the strongest natural fiber and, surprisingly, it easily competes with steel yarn in tensile strength
  • Silk takes color well, washes easily, and is easy to work with in spinning, weaving, knitting, and sewing

Our designers are often asked to explain the difference between the different types of silk drapery we offer at DrapeStyle.  The three primary categories of are Dupioni, Taffeta and Handwoven, also known as Matka.  All of our silks are imported from India however, there are distinct characteristics that make each one unique.

Silk Dupioni , or Douppioni, is known in the textile industry for its modest sheen and less refined texture. Dupioni is a lustrous silk often woven from two different colors of threads, so that it shimmers or changes color in the light. Dupioni is made from an irregular, rough silk reeled from double cocoons or cocoons nested together, making it necessary to reel them together. An elegant woven fabric made with a tight plain weave, fine warp yarns, filling yarns that form prominent, irregular crosswise ribs. Usually brightly colored, it has a moderately crisp drape, fairly reflective luster, and a nubby texture. DrapeStyle carries a wide variety of Dupioni in both solids and stripes.

Silk Taffeta is considered a more formal  and luxurious fabric due to its higher sheen and more refined weave. Our Taffeta has a crisp smooth finish that looks elegant in any pleat style. Please view our fabulous Striped Silk Taffeta drapes here.

DrapeStyle’ s European influenced, 100%  Handwoven Silk collection is the new look of silk.  We like to describe it as a  marriage between the elegance of silk and the natural texture of linen.  This combination gives it a unique,  heavy weight weave often used in transitional designs.  In any length, width or pleat style, this updated material has quickly become one of our best sellers. We have been making custom draperies, Roman shades and pillows for over 15 years. DrapeStyle custom makes everything right here in the USA by seamstresses who have an average of 25 years of experience. You won’t find better quality draperies anywhere. Please join us in the DrapeStyle experience, you will be pleased.

Silk is Superior. Here’s Why.

DrapeStyle has been making custom draperies for over 15 years and shipping them all across the US and Canada. And our most popular fabric for draperies is silk. Know for its luster, strength, and drapability, silk is one of the most beautiful fabrics and is a perfect choice for draperies.

Most people know that silk is a natural fabric that is woven from the raw silk produced by the silk worm. Most raw silk is harvested in China and then shipped to India where it is woven into silk fabric and shipped all over the world. India has been the predominant producer of silk fabrics for literally hundreds of years.

Our silk fabrics arrive from India on rolls that average about 40-45 yards each and the fabric is 54 inches wide. The first thing that we do when we are preparing to make a set of silk drapes, is to roll the fabric out against a light. We do this to look for imperfections in the silk fabric before we make any draperies from it. As a natural fabric, most people know that it is going to have natural flaws or imperfections.

At DrapeStyle we have set standards of what we allow to pass and what we reject. When we find flaws that we reject we have to cut the entire length of fabric to remove the flawed area. Silk is expensive and having to cut portions of fabric out of roll and discard them hurts our profit margins. It’s not the way other manufacturers do it but we think that it is the right thing to do. We make every drape as if it is going into our own home, we use only the finest materials and workmanship.

The result are beautiful draperies you can be proud to hang in your home. Our seamstresses have an average of 25 years of experience and they make each drape by hand in our Phoenix, Arizona workroom. The DrapeStyle way of making custom draperies takes a little more time, costs a little more money but we think it’s worth it. Contact us for more information on how we can help you design your dream drapes.

What is Handwoven Matka Silk?

Handwoven Silk in Barley

In India, Matka means “rough handloom silk fabric.” Matka comes from thick yarn spun from the silk worm and results in some irregularities in the fabric. Matka silk resembles the tweed fabric in texture. In spite of the irregularities of the Maka Silk texture, it is considered unique. The thickness of Matka Silk can vary as per the amount of yarn used. This results in a controlled thickness of the fabric which contributes to its varied uses in different industries of clothing, home furnishing, and textiles.

Handwoven Silk in Natural

Making silk is a delicate process and takes a number of steps. The first step is sericulture, which is the silk worm cultivation. Maintained in a controlled environment, the worms eventually form a cocoon. Farmers gather the cocoons and transport them to the factory for filature process, which is unwinding the strand from the cocoon to make a thread of raw silk. This raw silk is combined with approximately 10 other threads and wound onto a reel. The reels are sent to the mill, where the silk fabric is woven.

Handwoven Silk in Barley

Matka Silk takes dye beautifully and is very versatile. It may be used for dresses, sarees, suits, draperies, pillows and more.

DrapeStyle’s Handwoven Matka Silk is woven in India. We offer 18 different shades of Handwoven Silk and invite you to view this luxurious fabric for yourself. If you have any questions about Handwoven Silk or any of our fabrics, please contact us.

Inside or Outside Mount?

Inside Mount

Once you’ve selected your fabric from DrapeStyle’s 450 fabrics choices, you will need to determine whether you want to mount your Roman Shades inside or outside the window.  Would you like a more tailored look?  Do you have beautiful molding around your windows you would like to showcase?  You may want to consider Roman Shades that are mounted on the inside of the window frame.  When measuring for your Roman Shade, take three measurements for the width; at the top of the window, the middle and the bottom.  Your width will be the smallest of the three measurements.

For the length, again, take three measurements; left side, middle and right side.  Your length will be the longest of the three lengths.  A minimum depth of 1 ½” within the window casing is needed in order to mount the shade.

Outside Mount

Would you like to create the illusion that your window is larger than it really is?  Would you like to hide an unattractive window?  Are there any obstructions that might hinder you from mounting the Roman Shade inside the window frame?  Outside mounted shades offer more flexibility for mounting.  For instance, the shade can be mounted anywhere above the window. You can create the illusion of a larger window by hanging your Roman Shade higher than the top of the window frame.  This is also a good option when there is not enough depth within the window casing to mount the shade inside.  The outside mount will also provide the best light blockage and privacy.

To measure for an outside mounted Roman Shade, measure the total width of your coverage area.  We recommend that you add 1-1 ½” to each side beyond the casing of your window.  This will be your ordering width.  For the length, measure the height of the coverage area and add 1” above the top casing for mounting.

Whichever mounting option you select, Custom Roman Shades are a great way to dress up a window and enhance your living space.

What is Control Position?

This is a simple one.  Would you like the continuous cord that raises and lowers the shade, to hang on the left side or the right side of the shade?

Which Shade Style Do I Choose?

Selecting a shade style will depend on your style and usage of your Roman Shade.  All of DrapeStyle’s fabrics can be used to make any style of shade.  If you need a little help, we’re here to guide you through the process: 800.760.8257.  Here are some helpful descriptions of different types of shades:

Do I need Lining?

In one word, YES.  Lining not only gives the Roman Shade weight so that it drapes beautifully, but lining your Custom Roman Shades protects the fabric from damaging sunlight.  Selecting the appropriate lining for your room will make all the difference.

Will the shade be in a room such as a nursery or a theater room where you don’t want any light to come through?  You will need Blackout Lining.

Would you like privacy but still want some light to come through?  Select Sateen Lining.

Are your windows drafty in the winter or does the sun pour through in the summer?  Select Bump Lining to repel the heat and absorb cold.

Your Order is Complete!

And there you have it!  In just a few easy steps you can order Custom Roman Shades to properly fit your windows.  Or, if you still have questions, you can contact one of our designers and they will be happy to assist you with designing your very own Custom Roman Shades.  For more inspiration and ideas, please visit: http://www.drapestyle.com/custom-roman-shades.html
