Do I Need Tiebacks?

Tiebacks, holdbacks, medallions, tassels, they are called many things but they all do the same job; hold back your draperies.

Tiebacks can be a beautiful way to add color, style or a little whimsy to your draperies. They are also very functional if you want to be able to pull your drapes to the side to let in more light or if you would like a swoopy, formal look. They are also a nice way to showcase the view outside your window.

A tieback is usually something that attaches or wraps around the drape, and is easily removable. There are many sizes and styles of ready made tiebacks. Matching the fabric of the drapery or using oversize tassels are classic looks. Adding something like cording, rope or braided fabric are also beautiful alternatives.

I usually think of a holdback as something that is attached to the wall near the draperies and holds or pulls, the fabric back. Mount a curved metal bracket, peg or rosette on the wall about two-thirds of the way down the window. Matching the room and the drapery rod for style and finish is an elegant touch. Drapes can easily be pulled back or closed without much effort. This is a great choice is you are opening and closing your draperies often.

Whichever tieback you choose, let it be a reflection of your style, sophistication, and interior design. See DrapeStyle’s line of tassels, tiebacks and holdbacks for adding that final touch to your draperies.

Tiebacks, Tassles, and Holdbacks Oh My!

Holdbacks to pull back draperies

Holdbacks go by several different names including medallions, tie backs and rosettes. No matter what you call them, they’re a great addition to your window treatment. Holdbacks alone can be use to create elegant swag treatments, or use them along with your drapery rods as tie backs.

When you think of traditional holdbacks tassels might come to mind. Available in any color and size, tassels are a classic way to complete the look of your drapery. Fabric tiebacks can also be used to pull back draperies and let the light in. Order fabric tiebacks in matching or contrasting colors or patterns to add interest to your draperies.

Many times drapery hardware will have matching holdbacks, or medallions. Available in wood, iron, or composite material, these are a great way to finish the look and pull your drapery out of the way.

Holdbacks, or medallions, can also be used to hang valances or drapery that will be decorative, instead of functional. Easy to install and inexpensive, you can create a unique look by using holdbacks to hang your window treatments. Or use a combination of the above.

Or if you’re looking for a unique look, get creative! Re-purpose a pretty door knob or use a remnant of rope or ribbon. For kids rooms you can tieback drapes with a stuffed animal, flowers or garland.

Trim your windows with decorative or functional tiebacks, tassels and holdbacks for a finished designer look.

Last week I was working with a designer who was working with a couple that was remodeling their home.  They absolutely loved one of the Schumacher fabrics featured on our website.  They loved THE most expensive Schumacher fabric DrapeStyle offers, but having drapes made from this fabric was a little out of their price range.

I suggested that they consider having their drapes made in a linen fabric in a solid color.  DrapeStyle’s Belgium Estate Linen fabrics are beautifully textured and come in a range of colors.  They could then have tiebacks and pillows made in the Schumacher fabric they loved.  By doing this, they would save money and would still get a punch of color throughout the room, in the beautiful Schumacher Hot House Flowers fabric they loved so much.

The designer’s client loved the idea, and they were able to purchase beautiful custom drapes, tiebacks and pillows, save a bit of money, and still create the look they were hoping for.

Still considering tiebacks?  Don’t forget the outdoors!  When your outdoor drapes aren’t in use, tie them back for a finished look.  You can add matching tiebacks to your order or try a complementary fabric for an added punch of color.  Your tiebacks will be made with the same sun and mildew resistant fabric as your drapes.  Please see our outdoor page for more details.
