Gold Rush

I have to admit that when I first saw this gold trend my mind immediately went to the early 90’s shiny tacky brass. But this isn’t the brass and glass colonial chandelier you had hanging over your dining table. Today’s gold fixtures have been updated to look sleek and contemporary. Warm hues as accent pieces or hardware, in a satin finish.

Go for the gold in the bathroom-knobs, drawer pulls, towel rings and wall sconces all come in beautiful golden hues. Replacing your plumbing fixtures can be an easy and inexpensive way to add a little gold to your home.

Wallpaper with shine. Adding a gold wallpaper will add depth and richness to your room and adds a focal point to your space.

It’s sleek, it’s sophisticated and it’s stunning. Metallic accents can add a pop of glam and sophistication to your home. Try adding metallics to a dark painted room. The shine from the metal will add drama and shine to your room.

Adding metallics to your home can help create a focal point, or add a feeling of luxury and glamour. DrapeStyle has many fabrics that can compliment your gold accents. Please view our fabrics for ideas and designs. Contact us for more information and ideas. DrapeStyle has been making custom draperies, curtains, Roman shades and pillows for 15 years. We have a team of talented seamstresses that can make just about anything you dream up. Contact us for more information.

Fun Crafts for Celebrating National Button Day

National Button Day is observed annually on November 16. Founded in 1938, the National Button Society recognized button collecting as an organized hobby.

I found this great website that has dozens of crafts you can create using buttons. So celebrate National Button Day by making something you can wear or decorate your home with!

These 26 Adorable Projects Will Totally Change The Way You Look At Buttons!

Whether you’re a sewing master or an all-round crafter, you may be one of the many who have a big collection of buttons stashed away. There’s no way that you’ll be able to use them all up on fixing buttonless shirts, so perhaps it’s time to think outside the box a little. These cute and clever button projects will give you some fantastic inspiration with regards to putting your collection to good use in non-traditional ways.

Button Bowl

Button Bowl

This cute and whimsical button bowl is the perfect way to store your little bits and bobs like jewelry or keys. It uses the same method as the cotton thread balls where you use a balloon to create the shape you want, much like a mold, which is then popped and discarded once everything is set and dried. Quick Bookmarks

Quick Bookmarks

Everything you make doesn’t always have to be grand or complicated; you can make something as simple as a button bookmark with a paperclip that you know will be put to good use. It’s a quick and easy craft that can really help your school-going kids. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – IHeartNaptime

Simple Wall Art

Simple Wall Art

I just love this fleur-de-lis symbol, although, of course you can go with practically any image or monogram as long as it’s not too detailed or finicky. The best part about this project is that you don’t have to sew the buttons – you can cheat and just glue them on! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – Makely

Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas Tree

If you have a good range of sizes among all your forgotten buttons, then you may be able to make yourself a few of these charming Christmas tree ornaments. If you don’t have enough greens, though, you can either spray paint them or simply embrace the non-traditional colors. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – ModernMinerals

Beautified Button Shoes

Beautified Button Shoes

Whether you want to vamp up an old pair of shoes, or you found a plain pair on sale for next to nothing, a really cute way to do so is to add buttons. You’ll have to take the longer sewing route with these; when considering all the movement of your feet in your shoes, the buttons may just pop off if you use hot glue to attach them. Fridge Magnets

Fridge Magnets

Ok, so here’s a really nice and easy craft that is so simple, yet people don’t seem to think about it – button fridge magnets! It really is as easy as it sounds: glue magnets onto the buttons and you’re good to go! It adds a fun and playful element of whimsy to your kitchen. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – BigBoxDetox

Necklaces

Necklaces

There are so many ideas and ways that you can make some really pretty and interesting necklaces, ranging from simple to intricate to chunky, so I’ve found a handful for you to gloss over and get some inspiration for your own creation. Or, you could just make them all! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – YellowBlackbirdOhoh, TheDrewFamily and LittleMissMomma

Leather Cuff

9-leather-cuff

I love all things bohemian, so this leather button cuff is right up my alley. If you can get the blank leather cuff with all the hardware on it then you’re already halfway there, otherwise you’ll just have to attach those yourself. This could make a really interesting belt idea, too! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – LilBlueBoo

Cupcake Art

This is just too cute! It’ll perfectly adorn something like a nursery or child’s playroom. After seeing the tutorial, it’s clear that you can paint and button just about any image, but the cupcakes are definitely my favorites! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – BustedButton

Headband

Headband

Making a really cute button headband is actually really easy. The toughest part is just deciding on which buttons to use and how to arrange them – you can cover the entire piece of fabric, or you could just make a little accent part on the side. Flower Bouquet

Flower BouquetThese felt and button flowers are just adorable, and they’re so much fun to make, too! You could get your little ones involved in the project so that they can proudly display them in their rooms, or even give them to their teachers as gifts. Garland

Garland

This Christmassy garland is a real cinch to make if you can do a simple chain stitch. Easy Autumn Updates

Warm colors

As the weather cools you want to be cozy inside, so use warm colors to make your home feel inviting. There’s a bit of psychology going on here. We favor cool colors like blue and green during the hot months because they help us think of water and shady lawns. So during the cool months, use warm colors like red and yellow to conjure up warm fires hot drinks, and cozy blankets.

Texture

This is a good way to warm up a space with neutral color palette. Touch a piece before you decide on it-it’s the tactile fell various materials, such as rustic wood tables, scratchy woven baskets, bumpy sisal rugs and soft fur blankets.

Pattern

We associate fall with textiles like burlap, fleece an wool not only for their warmth but also for the bold patterns like plaids and stripes that come with them. Plaid is a classic fall choice that turns any room into a fall-friendly atmosphere, whether with throw pillows, blankets or prints on the wall.

Natural Elements

No fall decor is complete without a few pumpkins, gourds and fall leaves. Go outside and hunt around for bits of nature you can bring inside to display on your coffee table, scatter over your dining table centerpiece or put in a bowl on the mantel.

Enticing Scents

Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, chai-these are the scents of fall. Brew cups of tea to get you in the mood, and place batches of potpourri or candles around your home. You can also make a batch of spiced rum or cider to fill the house with the delicious scent.

Sherwin Williams 2018 Color of the Year-Oceanside

We are loving Sherwin Williams color of the year! Oceanside is a bold, beautiful, deep color that will make a statement in any room in your home!

2018 Color of the Year

A collision of rich blue with jewel-toned green, a color that is both accessible and elusive, Oceanside SW 6496, is our 2018 Color of the Year. A complex, deep color that offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown, Oceanside, bridges together a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new.

The color blue evokes a multitude of moods and associations depending on hue, shade and application. Despite this variety, blues are universally perceived as intelligent, honest and interesting—making blue the most beloved color worldwide.

Oceanside’s multi-dimensional, marine-inspired look can create a welcoming statement as a lively color for a front door. Its green-meets-blue tone can also boost creative thinking and clarity of thought in a home office, or invite meditation and introspection into a bedroom or reading nook.

It is universal when it comes to design style from mid-century modern to Mediterranean-inspired, traditional to contemporary.

Using the Sherwin-Williams ColorSnap® Visualizer, you can explore the Color of the Year and with the swipe of a finger see it on any wall.

Tag your Oceanside Twitter and Instagram posts with #SWCOLORLOVE or upload a photo.

2018 Key color combinations featuring Oceanside

Oceanside’s versatility allows it to play well with many colors. It is a bright counterpart to equally eye-catching colors like Exuberant Pink SW 6840 or Honey Bees SW 9018 or it can rest relaxingly alongside other blues like In the Navy SW 9178 or Adrift SW 7608. It is also the ideal companion for corals and copper metallic tones because of its timeless association with nature.

Window Treatments for the Bedroom

What to turn your bedroom into a luxurious retreat? Need room darkening drapes so you can sleep ’till noon? We can help!

Choose lightweight sheers for a comfortable, relaxed look. The natural light will make your space feel peaceful and airy. Choose linen sheers or lightweight polyester. Keep them unlined to let in lots of light.

For Spring and Summer try a floral drape. Fresh and bright, florals can add pattern and interest. Our Vern Yip, Candice Olson and Sarah Richardson Collections have many floral fabrics to choose from.

Many of our customers request room darkening drapes for their bedrooms. By adding blackout lining to your drapes or curtains, you can block out 95% of light. This can really improve your sleep, block out street lights, and enjoy sleeping in ’till noon! Cooling down your room will also happen if you purchase blackout drapes.

If you are especially sensitive to light or if you have young children that nap during the day, you may want to consider blackout drapes. You will sleep better in a cold, dark room.

Want a luxurious feel for your bedroom? Consider our 100% silk drapes. Available in 40 colors, you’re sure to find a shade that will compliment your room. Have them pool, or puddle on the floor to create a rich, luxurious look. Add 6″-12″ to the length of your drapes to create this classic, sumptuous look.

Window Treatments That Won’t Hide Your Home’s Beautiful Trim

If you have beautiful molding around your window, it is understandable that you don’t want to cover it up. There are several window treatment options to cover and enhance the look of your windows.

Hanging the window treatments above your window will allow to to see the top and the bottom of your window and the molding around it. Hanging your treatments higher also makes your room look larger. Keep in mind the projection of the molding, that is, how far out from the wall does the molding protrude? You will need to purchase hardware brackets that have a projection that will clear the molding. You will also want your custom drapes to have a return about 1/2″ longer than the bracket projection.

Hanging drapery about an inch into the glass will create the illusion that your windows are wider than they are. Skinny windows suddenly become larger because you won’t see where the window begins.

Valances and cornice boards can make short windows appear longer. DrapeStyle can create matching custom valances in any of our 500 fabrics.

If you don’t want to cover up any of your molding, you may want to consider having Roman shades made. This will draw the attention to your windows and put the emphasis on your molding. Try selecting a contrasting color for your shades to really make your molding pop!

Measuring guides are available online, but if you’re still not sure about which option is best for your home, or need a little help determining sizes, please contact us and speak to one of our designers for more information.

Since 2002, DrapeStyle has made the highest quality custom window treatments, right here in the USA.  Our Arizona studio employs some of the most talented seamstresses, who have an average of 25 years of experience in making custom draperies.

Fabric Samples Available from DrapeStyle

At DrapeStyle, we’ve been making draperies for 15 years. It’s something we are very passionate about. The first step we suggest customers take, is to order fabric samples.  As we all know, computer monitors can vary in the way they perceive color. We want to be sure you are ordering exactly what you had in mind. By ordering fabric samples, you will be able to see the fabric up close, and in your home’s lighting. A lot of our customers tell me that they tape the fabric samples to the wall near the window they want draperies made! They will live with the samples for a few days and determine which color is best.

Need a little help narrowing down the fabrics? (we have over 600!) Customers are usually drawn towards a particular color or fabric. Do you love texture? I would suggest linen or handwoven linen. Want a dramatic classic look? Take a look at our Dupioni solid and striped silks. Looking for the latest trendy fabric? Check out our designer fabrics; Vern Yip, Sarah Richardson, Celerie Kemble, Candice Olson and more.

Once you have determined which fabric works best for you, take a look at our measuring guide. This will help you determine the best length and width for your draperies.

Which lining do you select? Again we have a guide to help you determine what would work best for your home. But as always, we’re here to answer any questions you may have.

Think you’re ready to place your order? Simply place your order online or contact us for any questions you may have. You will have your custom made drapery in about five weeks. It’s that easy!

Make the Most of Your Attic

Originally posted on: www.homeguides.sfgate.com by Jennifer Blair

How to Make the Most of Your Attic Space

No matter how big your house is, it often seems like there isn’t enough space to meet your family’s needs. Whether you need an extra bedroom, a quiet home office or a spacious playroom for the kids, converting your attic space is an ideal way to add an extra room to your home. To get the most out of your attic, there are a few key changes that you may want to make so the space is as comfortable and inviting as any other room in your house.

Insulate It

Whether you plan to use your attic an extra bedroom, home office, playroom or home gym, it should be comfortable for year-round use. If your attic is not insulated, it may be too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer because air can easily pass in and out. You can use either loose-fill or batt insulation for your attic, though loose-fill insulation is usually less expensive and provides more effective coverage if it is installed correctly. In addition to adding insulation, make sure that exhaust fan duct work is properly sealed inside the attic so air can’t escape or enter through it. To ensure that the attic is a comfortable temperature throughout the year, you may also want to install a separate new heating and cooling system. Hot air rises, so you might strain your existing air conditioning system by using it to cool your attic in addition to the rest of the house.

Adjust the Stairs

If your attic stairs take up a great deal of floor space in the room, you may want to update them so you can actually use some of that space. In many cases, it’s best to place your attic stairs on the low roof side of your home. Typically, this requires breaking the staircase into two smaller flights that go in different directions and are connected by a landing. This type of staircase will take up less space in the attic, so you have more room for furniture and storage options. Depending on its size, you may even be able to use the landing itself for storage by adding built-in bookshelves.

Install Windows

If your attic is dark, you may have a hard time convincing your teen to use it as a bedroom or motivating yourself to do a workout in your home gym. Natural light helps open up a space and makes it feel brighter and more inviting. If your space lacks natural light, you can add windows or skylights. Dormer windows, which protrude slightly from the roof, are an ideal option because they provide additional space and ventilation while allowing natural light in. You can add built-in features beneath dormers, such as a desk, drawers or shelves, or use the windows to provide more headroom for a seating area. If you plan to use traditional windows, opt for the tallest and widest style that will fit to maximize the amount of light that enters the attic.

Add Color

While your new guestroom, playroom or home office may be a converted attic, there’s no reason that it should feel like an unfinished space. Simple decorating touches can go a long way to make it feel like another cozy, inviting space in your home. Start with color — if your attic doesn’t receive much natural light, it’s especially important to choose a light color for the walls so they reflect the light that is present. White works well, but it can make the space feel a little stark. Instead, opt for a soft yellow or peach shade to add warmth and color to the room. You can incorporate even bolder shades through accessories like window treatments, throw rugs, pillows, and artwork so the space has a welcoming vibe that makes your family want to spend time there.

Grommet Drapes-Pros and Cons

Grommet topped drapes have become increasingly popular. They are sleek and clean and offer a modern look. Here is a look at the pros and cons of drapery panels with this type of treatment.

With so many grommet sizes and finishes, you are sure to find a look that compliments your home. Did you know that some companies use plastic grommets? DrapeStyle only uses solid brass, corrosion resistant grommets. Choose from black, matte nickel or oil rubbed bronze finish. Because they are corrosion resistant, they are suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Since drapes with grommets don’t have pleats sewn into them, you will need to “dress down” the drapes. This means you will have to arrange the drapes to make them look good. Grommet drapes can look messy after opening and closing them. If you want nice, long pleats, you will have to adjust them and space them out to create this look.

If you are wanting blackout draperies, you will need to adjust the grommet drapes when you bring them closed to the center of your window. Blackout lining can be added to any of our drapes, but when the grommet drapes are closed, there may be a gap between the drapes in the center. Having your drapes made with extra fullness will solve this problem.

Grommet panels will never hang flat, but that’s ok. One of the beautiful features of grommets is the wave they create. Therefor, when determining the width of your drapery, you should figure the drapery panels to be at least twice as wide as the space you are trying to cover. If you want a fuller look, have your drapes made 2-3 times the width of your window.

Do you need decorative drapery panels? Grommets are a perfect solution. Beautiful to look at, and once you “dress them down”, the pleats will stay in place and you won’t have to worry about them again. Consider pairing your decorative drapes with roman shades. They will provide the privacy you need while looking stunning.

Celerie Kemble

One of DrapeStyle’s most popular designers is Celerie Kemble. We offer many fabrics from her collection and we thought you would enjoy learning more about the accomplished interior designer.

Originally posted on www.kembleinteriors.com:

Kemble Interiors, Inc. was founded in 1982 by Palm Beach native Mimi Maddock McMakin. McMakin has been recognized for her distinctive fusion of whimsy with respectful restoration in many a storied Mizner, Volk, and Urban designed estate or club. She has over 40 years of experience bringing comfort and beauty to the homes of her clients across America.

Mimi’s daughter and partner in the New York office of Kemble Interiors, Celerie Kemble claims her childhood was in many ways a design tutorial spent around construction sites, antique stores, and in the unique homes designed by her mother. A graduate of Harvard, Celerie worked briefly in film production before quickly succumbing to what she calls a compulsion for design and the creation of thoughtful interiors that “put the person in the place.” Since then, she has spent the past 18 years cultivating a portfolio of much publicized residential and commercial interiors that are as unique and diverse as her clientele.

The firm’s success is a reflection of both Mimi and Celerie’s quirky design ethos, which balances the aesthetic integrity of the project with the needs/personality of the client. To create a successful interior, the process must be well-managed, the client’s needs and dreams carefully considered, and the budget respected.

Phoebe Kemble, director and Head Chef of Kemble Kitchens, provides gourmet comfort food for events large and small, happily sharing culinary secrets from her life-long passion for memorable meals and travel.

Based in London, Phoebe can also be found in Paris, New York, The Hamptons and Palm Beach. She is not only a lifelong foodie and graduate of Le Cordon Bleu, but also holds a B.A. from Brown University.

Mimi, Celerie and Phoebe make up a creative family trio who excel at devising environments and experiences that delight and inspire their clients.

Room Divider Ideas

Can’t make the commitment to building a wall? (or maybe your landlord won’t let you!)  Need privacy but want a stylish low cost option? You can have that home office/dining area/bedroom you’ve been wanting.

A room divider can create privacy in a small space, or define new areas in a large, open space. The beauty of the room divider, as opposed to a wall, is its impermanence. Installing room dividers maintains the flexibility to change a space’s utility with relative ease. They can be movable, sliding away or hanging down to suit the needs of the moment. They can be opaque, allowing light to permeate and air to circulate. A bookcase or curtains make some of the fastest room dividers, but you can DIY one with almost anything. With a little creativity you can find a solution that will fit your budget, design style, and lifestyle needs.

Window treatments are designed to create privacy from people looking into your home.  Why not use them to create privacy in your home? At DrapeStyle, you can have room dividing drapes made in any height or width. Choose your fabric, pleat style and size, and you’ll receive your custom room divider in about four weeks.

If you need a little help determining the size drape you’ll need, we’re here to help. Want to order free fabric samples? Order HERE. We have been making custom drapery for 15 years. You won’t find better quality custom draperies, Roman shades or pillows. Read what our customers have said about us.

At DrapeStyle, everything we make is custom made, and our designers can help you determine the best fabrics, sizes and application for your project. Please contact us or visit www.drapestyle.com for more information.

Ways to Make Your Room and Windows Look Larger

Drapes add impact through the use of color, pattern, texture and decorative details. And when hung right, they can give the illusion of height in a room, visually widen a window and let in huge amounts of light. You don’t have to be an expert to know how to hang drapes. If your space is small, or you just want your windows to appear larger, here are some simple ways to make your windows look larger.

If you have the space, try using a drapery rod that is 60-80 percent larger than the window. Each drapery panel should span from the rod’s end to just past the outer edge of the window glass. In both cases, the eye assumes the extra fabric at each end of the rod covers window instead of wall.

Make short windows look taller by hanging floor-length curtains or draperies at or near the ceiling. Installing the rod 2 inches below the ceiling molding is ideal. Just be sure your finial isn’t too large for this.

To make a short window look taller, have draperies made from printed fabric with a vertically inclined pattern. Vertical patterns include more than just stripes; you can use any pattern that draws your eye up and down rather than side to side. To make tall, narrow windows look wider, choose a horizontal pattern that draws your eye across instead of up. If you want to create the illusion of both height and width, opt for a vertically inclined pattern, or use a solid or random print.

To make a small window look both taller and wider, do both of the above. Install an extra-long drapery rod at or near the ceiling. Hang floor-length curtain or drapery panels from the rod, with the leading edges just overlapping the outside edges of the window glass.

Now for the rest of the room:

We all know of white’s reflective qualities. It opens up a room, making it feel airy and light, calm and serene. Painting the walls and ceiling the same shade of white only enhances this cloud-like effect. And it serves to blur the boundaries between wall and ceiling, causing your eye to travel up, essentially making the ceiling seem higher. Finally, in small spaces that can quickly become cluttered looking, white is a good choice because it simplifies a space and emphasizes the architecture

Any discussion of small spaces needs to include the idea of using mirrors to create a greater sense of openness. Not only do they reflect light, they also reflect the view, thereby tricking the eye into perceiving more space.

Also avoid heavy, weighty pieces that eat up too much of the usable space in the room. For example, a sleek sofa or chair will give you as much sitting room as its overstuffed cousin but will take up much less of your room. If you’re wanting a large statement piece, hang it on the wall (a piece of art and mirror). Don’t consume valuable living space by putting it on the floor.

If possible, avoid heavy materials and fabrics that absorb light and weigh your room down. Linen is a perfect example of a lightweight material that will increase the sense of airiness in the room.

With these tips you’re sure to create a larger looking, airy space. And when you’re ready to purchase your drapes, please contact DrapeStyle. We have been in the online business for 15 years. Our seamstresses have an average of 25 years of custom drapery experience. Please visit our Houzz page for more information.
