What’s Your New Year’s Resolution? Resolve to Refresh

Custom Curtains and Drapes by DrapeStyle

How many of you made New Year’s resolutions?

I usually make two; one resolution I know I can keep, like, I vow to take a multivitamin everyday.  And the other is more of a goal.  This year, my “goal” is to clean out and organize my craft closet.  I have a craft closet, stuffed full of all things crafty; jewelry making stuff, pillow making stuff, party decorating stuff, sewing stuff, 4th of July decorations, St. Patty’s day decorations, floral arranging stuff… You get the point.  So I plan on cleaning out my closet, and reorganize everything so it’s easy to get to.  And I’m going to try and get my husband to clean out the garage.  And I think if we clean and purge enough, we might have enough “stuff” to hold a yard sale.

Resolve to Refresh…

If the New Year puts you in the same mind set; cleaning out and organizing, you may find that you want to update a few things around the house.  What about custom made window treatments and pillows?

Much like a well tailored suit, custom window treatments in the correct length and width, can make all the difference.  And DrapeStyle can help.  We’ve been making custom drapes and roman shades since 2002.  In any length and any width, we can create a look that’s just right for your home.  You know how good you look in a tailored outfit, if it fits good, you feel great.  It’s the same with window treatments.

Sure, you can purchase drapes at the department store in the lengths they want to sell.  Sure, you can go to the home store and purchase the same ready made roman shades your neighbors have.  Or you can get custom window treatments made in your choice of over 400 fabrics, 6 drapery pleat styles, 5 roman shade styles, and dozens of different trims, tassels, fringe and ribbon for that truly custom look.

Baby It’s Cold Outside! DrapeStyle Can Help!

Winter’s coming…and according to the Farmer’s Almanac, you’d better stock up on long johns and firewood.  Especially if you’re east of the Rockies, predictions are, you are going to be hit hard!  Pair that with rising energy costs, and your monthly home heating costs could go through the roof!

Here are 7 things you can do to help combat a cold house and make your thermostat happy:

1. Add A Down Filled Comforter

Down has always been the preferred insulator when worn or for bundling up while sleeping.  Body heat is trapped between the little fluffs of down, creating a re-generating heat source that will keep you warm all night long.  There are different weight levels available-some are even available with dual-zone comforters for bed partners with different sleeping temperature preferences! The best down originates from birds from the coldest climates, such as Hungarian or Siberian geese.  Plus, using a duvet allows you to change your room’s look easily from season to season or from one style to another without having to reinvest in a quality insert.

2. Use A Humidifier

Cold, winter air is notoriously dry, often leaving your home’s humidity around 10%…far short of the ideal of 30-40%  Having the correct humidity levels not only provides additional warmth to a house, but it also has many other benefits such as reducing allergens, reducing the risk of furniture damage, and controlling static electricity.

3. Change The Direction Of Your Ceiling Fans

Most fans spin and pull air up to the ceiling.  By simply reversing the direction of your ceiling fan and pushing the rising heat back down into your living space, you can save as much as 10% on energy costs.  Ceiling too high to manually change blade direction?  This may be a good time to replace your fan with one with a built-in remote control.

Door Draft Stopper Crochet Pattern, Crochet Home Decor, Draft Dodger, Draft Excluder, Home Decor Crochet Pattern

4. Reinforce Cold, Drafty Areas

Windows — Take a candle or incense stick to the window on a breezy day.  Move around the frame, inside and outside of the trim, and see if the smoke moves.  If it does, you have a draft spot.  Use paintable caulk for around the trim and silicone caulk outside if you can.  There are window weatherstrips available at most home improvement stores as well.  Insulating your window draperies can help keep the draft from entering the room as well.

Doors — The old, simple solution is a draft dodger-a fabric tube filled with sand or rice that lays along the bottom of your door.  Etsy has some fun and stylish options.  The best option, however, is to replace the weather stripping around your door, including the threshold strip.

Scarlet Mulberry Silk, Cartridge Pleat

5. Add Insulated Drapery Lining

DrapeStyle can help with this one!  DrapeStyle offers insulated drapery lining, also called thermal lining, for all drapes and roman shades.  It’s common for drafts to come in around windows.  However, most pre-fabricated drapery panels available at most retailers, come with a simple, thin lining or with no lining at all.  DrapeStyle’s custom drapes and roman shades include lining! Let us help you select the interlining that’s best for your climate.  Interlining also adds body and weight to your drapes for a very luxurious, custom look. Our skilled workroom can add the following interlining to your drapes:

Flannel Interlining— Similar to the lightweight flannel sheets your grandma used, this supple lining goes between the face fabric and standard sateen lining.  Flannel interlining has been shown to reduce heat loss by 25%.

Bump Interlining— Originally used in Europe’s cold-climate country homes, bump interlining offers the most insulation for cold and sound.  It also gives a nice weight and drape to fine fabrics, such as silk.

6. Add Rugs To Bare Floors

Aside for the obvious (that rugs are warmer than tile or wood), wool rugs in particular are a natural insulator similar to down.  They’re hypoallergenic, provide moisture, and are incredibly durable.  Well-kept wool rugs can be handed down through generations.  Even better than an area rug would be wall-to-wall wool carpeting.

7. Get An Energy Audit

An inexpensive (often subsidized-check with your local electric company) professional test for air leaks, insulation levels and other thermal performance factors is the best way to learn where the cold is getting into your house.  They will give you tips and tricks to help keep the cold out, and often times will do the work themselves at a discounted fee.  Click here for more information on audits.

So there you have it, 7 great ways to help keep the cold out this winter.  Or, you could always take up baking, not only will the heat from the oven heat up your home, but the baked goods you hand out to neighbors and co-workers will get you off of Santa’s naughty list!

Ideas for Dressing Tall Windows

It’s first thing in the morning, you pour yourself a cup of coffee, you turn around and who’s looking in your window staring you in the face?  Your neighbor.  Unless you don’t mind waving to your neighbor in your pajamas,  you need window treatments.  But if you have tall windows, what options are there?

Tall, dramatic windows can offer spectacular views and add height to a room.  But covering them is a whole other story.

The first thing you need to ask yourself is, do I need privacy, or are these window treatments going to be decorative.  If your neighbor is close enough to see what you are eating for dinner, then you probably want window treatments that offer privacy.  If you need full coverage, from the top of the window to the bottom, then consider drapes with privacy lining.  DrapeStyle has the ability to make any length drape.  Select a decorative fabric that complements your room, then simply draw the drapes closed when privacy is needed.

Do you occasionally need the room darkened?  Roman shades with blackout lining is the answer. You can keep the shades raised most of the time for a more decorative look, and lower them when the time comes to enjoy a movie at home, or when the baby needs to take a nap.

Sheers

Do your tall windows offer an incredible view that you don’t want to obstruct?  Consider adding sheers to your windows.  DrapeStyle carries sheers in several different colors, style and fabrics so you are sure to find one that works for you.  Sheers can add drama and softness to a room, without breaking the bank.  Whether you are looking for a classic sheer or something more modern, DrapeStyle has plenty of reasonably priced sheers to choose from.

Want to add a little color to your walls but keep your view?  Why not add long drapes to either side of the window?  A drape that is 1 or 2 widths wide might be just enough to add a little drama to your room.  You can add a decorator touch by using shorter drapery rods to hang your long drapes from.  DrapeStyle offers custom drapery hardware so you can order just the right size hardware, custom made for your windows.  And by using narrow drapes, you can save a little money.  Have you been eyeing a dramatic fabric but having it made into full width drapes might put you over your budget?  Decorative drapes are a great way to get that pop of color you want without breaking the bank.

If you really don’t want coverage but need protection form the sun, consider using UV window film on your windows.  It will cut down on glare and help protect your furnishings from the sun.

Want to add more drama to your tall windows?  Bring the attention up with a band of contrasting fabric towards the top of the drape.  Need to ground things a bit?  Bring the attention down by adding a band of fabric to the bottom of your drape and your space will feel more cozy.

Made in the USA

DSCF1193

Veteran’s Day is this week and it reminds me how grateful I am to the men and women who have served this great country.  How proud I am to live in this great country.  How fortunate I am to live in this great country.  When my husband and I bought our first home 15 years ago, do you know what the first thing I bought was?  No, not drapes.  An American flag!  I couldn’t wait to fly an American flag outside my own home, I am so proud to be an American!

Which leads me into thinking about “Made in the USA”.  What exactly does that mean?  Does that really matter?

DrapeStyle has been making custom drapes, roman shades and pillows in the USA from the very start.  Why is this important?  We not only design here, we manufacturer here.  This means that DrapeStyle is able to control the quality of the products it produces.  The custom drapes and roman shades we produce right here in Arizona are of the highest quality in both fabric and workmanship.  I receive about two or three calls a week, from customers wanting to know where our drapes are made.  I’m proud to say that DrapeStyle’s products are made in the USA.

A few examples of DrapeStyle’s American suppliers:

  • In 1889, the F. Schumacher Fabric Company was started in New York.  DrapeStyle carries many of Schumacher’s stunning fabrics.  To this day, F. Schumacher is still a family owned company and continues to be a leader in the fabric industry.
  • The Robert Allen fabric company was started over 75 years ago in Massachusetts and continues to reside there today.
  • We have many suppliers from small fabric companies in Southern California.
  • Our linings and interlinings are made by Hanes, right here in the USA.
  • DrapeStyle uses Sunbrella fabrics for our outdoor drapes and pillows.  Sunbrella features sun and water resistant fabrics in a rich array of colors, and it is manufactured in North Carolina.
  • Our hardware is hand forged in Los Angeles by artisans who pride themselves in creating products by hand.

So as you can see, we support many local American companies by using them as suppliers for our finished products.

Need more great reasons to buy “Made in the USA” products?

  • When you buy American made products, the proceeds remain in the U.S. economy.  The money you spend then pays the workers that directly or indirectly created the product you just purchased!
  • American manufacturers abide by strict regulations to protect the environment.  These regulations do not exist in most of the top countries manufacturing and importing their goods into the USA causing massive pollution and environmental abuse.
  • Importing countries have little or non-existent regulations or standards for working conditions.  By keeping our dollars in the USA, we are not supporting these horrible working conditions (long hours, exploitation of children, extremely low wages, etc.).
  • Quicker turn around times.  Everything is here so that means it gets made more quickly, and gets shipped to you more quickly!

Nothing at DrapeStyle is “ready-made”.  Custom draperies take a little more time, cost a little more money, but we think it’s worth it.  And most importantly, all of our drapes, curtains, roman shades and pillows are made from the highest quality materials, right here in the USA, by a team of professionals that have an average of 25 years experience.  We hope you have as deep as a commitment to American-made products as we do.

Selecting the Proper Grommets for Custom Drapery

You would think that all Grommets are created equal.  The truth is, that if you are buying your drapery from most of the larger retailers than, they probably are.  Not at DrapeStyle though.  We buy all of our Grommets from the premium supplier in the US for drapery supplies.  They sell a range of quality (and priced) grommets.  I would bet that most manufacturers are simply going to buy the cheapest and at nearly $1.00 per grommet it hard to blame them.  At DrapeStyle we only buy the best grommets available, period.  Our grommets are heavy weights.  They won’t bend very easily or crack.  Nothing worse than buying gorgeous silk drapes and having a grommet crack and tear the silk fabric.  Ruining one set of silk drapery is going to offset any savings you are going to get from buying cheap grommets for a long time.

For our Outdoor Drapery we use very thick grommets that are made of 100% brass.  Brass is resistant to corrosion and will not tarnish like most every other metal.  If you are buying any Outdoor Drapes from anyone, please insist that the grommets are made of Brass.  Our Brass Grommets can be powder coated in a variety of finishes.

Outdoor Drapes at DrapeStyle

Well it sure is Outdoor Drapery Season here at DrapeStyle! It seems like we go right from the Holiday Season to the Outdoor Season but we sure do love it. In case you weren’t aware well sell amazing custom Outdoor Drapes and we feature only the best Sunbrella Fabrics. Another great feature of our Outdoor Drapery is the weight that we sew into the bottom of each panel. The weight is actually a long thin flexible weighted rope that holds the drapery panel down so it doesn’t blow to excessively in the breeze. We also use weather resistant poly buckram at the header (top of the panel) and polymer thread which is also weather resistant. If you like to add grommets to your outdoor drapes we offer 100% brass grommets in a Matt-nickel finish and black finish. You are simply not going to find these quality details in any outdoor drapery you buy from any Online Retailer or Department Store!

Designers Guide to Drapery Pleat Styles

Wow, custom drapes can really cost a fortune. It’s no wonder that so many people turn to Professional Interior Designers or Decorators to help them make the “right” choices when it comes to selecting their window treatments. When considering custom drapes there are a few very important components to consider, one of them is your “pleat style”. What is a “pleat” you ask? The “Pleat” or as it is often referred to as the “heading’ is the top of the drapery panel that attaches to the drapery rod or track. For literally hundreds of years this drapery headings have been “decorated” into a variety of styles that range from very classic or traditional to modern and contemporary. Let’s walk through each of the most common pleat styles for custom drapes and help you find the “right” one for your home.

The “Flat Pleat” or “Flat Panel”. A Flat drapery panel is one that does not have a pleat at the top of the drape. This is the most basic of drapery panel and is very common. With a flat panel you will attach the panel to the current rod using drapery pins which are attached to the back of the panel. The flat panel is considered to be very relaxed and casual and is often used for light weight fabrics in informal rooms. Think, a soft blowing sheer linen drapery panel in a beach cottage.

The “Rod-Pocket” Drapery Panel. A Rod-Packet panel is a Flat panel but instead of attaching to a rod by pinning it using drapery hooks, the panel is slid over the rod using a “pocket” which is sewn into the panel. While still a very casual look, the rod-pocket will remain affixed to the rod and will not “billow” like a flat panel will. A Rod-Pocket panel is the most common type of panel that you will find in your “big box” retail store. Designers will generally shy-away from Rod-Pocket Panels as they are considered to look and be “cheap” in most circles.
The “French Pleat”. So now we are moving into the more intricate pleat styles that you will find in most high-end drapery retailers. The French Pleat is extremely classic and features a fluted fold at the top of the panel which is “tacked” about three inches down from the top. The result is a fluted, almost floral looking fold that has been popular since the 17th Century. The French Pleat is considered more formal and ornate and you will find many a European Castle plenty of French Pleated Silk Drapes in their windows.
The “Parisian Pleat”. A close relative to the French Pleat is the Parisian Pleat. Like the French Pleat, the Parisian Pleat featured a three-finger fluted fold at the top of the pleat. With the Parisian Pleat, however, the fold is tacked at the top of the pleat as opposed to the bottom. The result is a “pinched” looking floral pleat where the folds are gathered at the top. This “Pinch” feature is why the Parisian Pleat is also often times referred to as a “Pinch Pleat”.
The “Inverted Pleat”. Both the Parisian Pleat and French Pleat are considered very traditional and classic. The Inverted Pleat, however, is more contemporary and modern. The Inverted Pleat is where the Seamstress creates inverted folds at the top of the drape and then stitches them from the rear of the drapery panel. The result is a very clean looking and highly tailored drapery pleat that is very “classy” but also very modern and elegant. The Inverted Pleat is used with many different types of fabrics.
The “Cartridge Pleat”. A Cartridge Pleat is formed by creating rolls in the drapery fabric which are sew into round, cylindrical cartridges. The cartridges are generally 2-3 inches in diameter and are stuffed with a pillow fill material or paper. The resulting “cartridge” is typically 4-6 inches long and they are spaced apart to match the materials pattern.
The “Grommet Pleat”. The most contemporary of all drapery pleats would have to be a “Grommet Pleat”. Grommets are usually made of brass to resist corrosion, especially when used for custom outdoor drapes and can range in size from less than an inch is diameter to over 4 inches in diameter. Drapery panels featuring grommets can be challenging to open and close and the drapery provider will often recommend a “drapery wand” to help you slide the drapery panel open and closed.

While these are the most common of drapery pleats, there are literally dozens more. Pleats that feature buttons, tabs and ribbons are common and will usually be specified by your Designer or Decorator. The most important factor in selecting the correct pleat for you drapes is to be sure that you are working with a competent Professional who can help guide you through your wide range of options. Today, custom drapes are extremely expensive and it is much better to do your homework in advance.
