HGTV Junkie

Ok – We admit it.  We are all HGTV Junkies at DrapeStyle!  We have a couple of Camps here too.  Some are a little “Old School” and love to watch Candice Olson.  Candice has done some amazing things in the Fabric World and we actually carry some of her Fabrics that she made in conjunction with one of our favorite Mills, Kravet. The Canadian born Olson seems to have really “blown-up” since her original days on HGTV and we see her everywhere now.  Could not be happier for her.

A couple of us in the office can’t get enough of of the Minneapolis native Nicole Curtis.  We love her and we love the amazing things she does with older mid-west homes.  No doubt that some us think that Nicole is the “next big thing” for both the DIY Channel and HGTV.

We haven’t had the chance to work with either of them yet but we really hope that when Candice Olson or Nicole Curtis think Custom Drapery they think DrapeStyle!

French Pleated Custom Drapery

The French Pleat is one of the oldest and most classic pleat styles for custom made curtains or drapery.  The French Pleat is also known as a Pinch Pleat and these two terms are often used interchangeably.  The French Pleat is formed by creating three folds at the top of the drapery panel.  These three folds are then “pinched” about three inches down from the top of the drapery panel and tacked using a industrial sewing machine.  The three folds are then fanned out at the the top forming a fluted fan.  When forming the pleat it is important to fold all layers of the drapery fabric including the buckram, lining and interlining.  These layers will make it very difficult, if not impossible, for a typical sewing machine to penetrate.  You will need to use an industrial machine known as a “Tacker” to be able to penetrate all of the layers of fabrics.

One of our Classic Drapery Pleat Tackers we use everyday at DrapeStyle.  Yes, this machine was actually made in Leeds England!

Design Delema, Where to Call for Help with Selecting Window Treatments

Lets face it, buying custom made window treatments can be a very expensive proposition.  Regardless if you are shopping for custom drapes, Roman Shades, valances or shutters you can easily spend upwards of $10,000 by the time your done.  We’re talking about a lot of money here and you should not have to make some of the important decisions on your own.  For most window treatments you need to be very accurate with your measurements, especially if you have larger or odd-size or odd-shaped windows.  When you are making a sizable investment we always recommended have a professional window treatment measure done early in the process.  Having an accurate measure done first can help avoid costly mistakes and re-makes later and may also help save you money on you initial purchase and installation.  Most custom drapery or window treatment retailers may often provide an initial measure for free.  Retailers and Workrooms can also use a detailed measure to find ways to save money by maximizing fabric lengths and widths.  After all, the majority of the cost or expense with custom soft window treatments, like drapery comes from the cost of the fabric.  If your Retailer or Workroom can shave a yard of fabric off of every treatment, the savings can really add up.

Beyond the measure, better drapery retailers and Workrooms should be able to provide you with free design advice.  It is important to understand, and ask, who will be giving the advice.  Many of the larger retailers will send a “Sales Person” out to your home who is on commission.  You are not going to get good, if any, design advice from a untrained Sales Person.  If you are dealing with your retailer over the phone, make sure you are speaking with someone with real-world design experience.  At DrapeStyle, we don’t have “Sales People”.  When you call us you are speaking with a trained Interior Design Professional who understands your entire project from measure to fabric selection to construction.  When calling any national retailer, ask some good questions to be sure you are not speaking to a Sales Person who is simply reading off of a script.  At DrapeStyle we only hire Sales Designers who have completed advanced classes at either Design Schools (Such as Interior Designers Institute (IDI) in Newport Beach) or a 4-year University.  We love to bring in Interns who are Students at IDI and then, after they graduate, have them come on as full-time Sales Designers.

Custom Roman Shade Styles

Love the look of drapery but don’t have a lot of space, roman shades are the solution. Roman shades are a timeless compliment to finish off your windows. DrapeStyle custom makes all of our Roman Shades here in our Costa Mesa workroom. Flat Roman Shades are our most requested style and are featured on our website .  We also offer 4 additional styles that will be added to our site in the coming weeks.
Flat Roman – neat and clean our Flat Roman shade works well with any décor. When lowered the shade is flat with no horizontal seams.
Relaxed Shade – the relaxed bottom of the shade offers a sophisticated softness while keeping the tailored look of the flat roman style.
London Shade – gathered at the sides the London shade presents a casual elegance & softness. When lowered the balloon shape is visible at the bottom of the shade.
Cascade – constructed with evenly spaced horizontal pockets reinforced with rods the Cascade Shade is a beautifully structured option.  Similar to the Flat Roman the Cascade offers a flat tailored front.
Pleated – soft pockets or horizontal folds are the trademark of our Pleated Shade. The Pleated Shade shade provides uniform structure with a contemporary softness.
Roman shades can be made in any of our fabrics. We also have the ability to add trimmings, contrast banding & borders. The combinations are limitless.

Drapery Design. It’s All in the Details…

In The Details.

We’ve all heard the saying “the devil is in the details”, for me the details are the most exciting part of any project. There is nothing like finding the perfect accent piece to complete your masterpiece.

Have you ever been out and about and you see a little trinket that reminds you of someone you know & just the thought of giving it to them puts a smile on your face? The high you get giving it to them and seeing the priceless look on their face when they realize that you know them so well…that’s one of my favorite parts of designing for my clients.

Completing a room with custom drapery is one of the best ways to add detail to your room. Finding the perfect shade of Silk or Linen opens the door to a world of possibilities. Do I add a border, maybe a trim? How about a contrasting edge band? Is there a complimenting sheer or Roman Shade I should consider? These are some of the many options that I love helping my clients with.

Working at DrapeStyle I am in constant awe of the incredible fabrics & trimming options that we are presented with. Just today I met with a mill representative who brought over 20+ books of their latest trim collections. I was immediately inspired. From tape trims, to rusche to tassel trim my mind was racing. I’m looking forward to pulling together a number of trim options to coordinate with our existing drapery styles and I have already started sketching some new ideas inspired from my meeting today. The possibilities are endless; the “details” are endless.

Using Roman Shades in Conjunction with Custom Drapes

Sometimes when trying to decide between Custom Drapes for your windows or Custom Roman Shades the answer just may be “yes”. Yes, as in “both”. One of our all time favorite looks is using a Roman Shade in conjunction with a drape. This technique adds depth and texture to your room and lets you play with more fabric colors and textures as well. Consider using a solid custom drape along with a strong pattern with your Roman Shade or vice-versa. In the attached image we are using a really bold fabric on the Roman Shade, Schumacher Imperial Trellis in navy along with a solid linen custom drape in navy and white. The fabrics work really well together and really create a nice depth of field to the room and window.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match silk and linens as well. You could get a great look by mixing a solid silk roman shade in a base color along with a complimenting custom drape in a patterned linen or poly.

Have fun and let us know how we can help design your next set of custom drapes!

Where to Buy Custom Drapes Online

We realize that you have many choices of where to buy your next set of custom drapes.  When we started DrapeStyle about twelve years ago the notion of buying or selling custom curtains online was really just a novelty at best.  No one really thought that it was a good idea or a realistic one for that matter.  Over a decade later with over 50,000 Customers in ten countries the idea of buying everything, including custom drapes is not only accepted but in most cases now the “norm”.

Sometimes we look back to catalogs and marketing pieces we made ten years ago and it’s fun to just reminisce.  Here is one of our first tv commercials we made that we used to run on local television.

We sincerely look forward to the next ten years for sure!

Restoration Hardware Drapery & DrapeStyle

So I was sitting in my local Restoration Hardware in Fashion Island last week.  I really do love that store, they have really great stuff.  I’m sitting in that new “aero” looking chair with the leather and stainless steel.  Might be aluminum with the rivets showing.  Really cool Howard Hughes looking chair.  I really do love it.

So, I’m sitting there and next to me sitting on the matching couch to the chair is this really nice couple.  They are speaking to one of the Sales Associates about buying some drapes for their large windows.  Now look, if you are looking for ready-made drapes that are pretty good quality.  And, you need them NOW, than by all means go visit your local Restoration Hardware and see what they have.

Now here is where things got a little bit off track.  So, this Couple has extra long and extra wide windows that they need drapery for.  So they are going to buy eight ready-made drapery panels from Restoration Hardware and have them sewn together.  My ears have perked-up a bit.  They do the calculations to figure out exactly how much coverage they need and determine the 8 panels will handle it.  Sew 4 together for each side.  I’m thinking this is pretty creative.  They were not crazy about the rod-pocket pleat option or the fact that their local seamstress was going to charge them $300 to sew them all together but they were committed to the idea.

I’m still admiring the leather and aluminum chairs.

The next thing I know they are up at the register checking out.  I hear the Sales Associate give them their total.  It came to almost $2,000 for their Cotton / Linen Blend Drapes.  Youser!  Now on top of the $2,000 they are going to pay their seamstress to sew the panels together to make two large panels – keep in mind, these are still rod-pockets!  They are spending $2,300 for ready-made drapes.

Of course I bit my tongue.  Would not be polite to me to say something while I am sitting in Restoration.  After all, I really do love their stuff.  But let me get this off my chest.  If you are going to buy ready-made drapery panels and sew them together to make larger panels, please call us.  Tell us what you need and what your budget is.  I will almost guarantee that the difference in price will be negligible and the quality will be much better.  I promise.  In the long-run you will be much, much happier.

Now, if you are looking for a really cool leather-aluminum chair, I can’t help you their, go to Restoration Hardware for sure.

The Old House

Effective ideas that will help you transform your old home into a modern one

Interior design ideas are very important when deciding on the decoration pattern to undertake while transforming your old house to a new house. This transformation is usually very important especially for people who have old furniture and other house items and see the need for change. There are different ways through which you can be able to upgrade your house while still using the old furniture in the house. This is usually very important in that it makes it quite easy and economical to transform your house. You do not have to replace your old furniture with new ones as this might prove to be quite hard and even uneconomical. In addition to this, you may not be in a position to be able to dispose off the old furniture.

In order to spice up the interior decoration of your house, you should change the decoration pattern that exists in the “old” house. This change is usually very important in that it makes it quite easy for one to be able to note a difference in the house. You should recessed lighting to replace the already existing hanging light fixtures in the house. You should also consider upgrading the paint in your house to a modern paint, one that is very attractive and appealing to the eye. You should carry out an extensive search on the best color combination that matches the furniture and other items in your house.

It is equally advisable to give your house a feel of custom made drapery. This decoration is a high quality decoration that is able to effectively complement the house’s lighting, painting and even furniture among other items. This decoration should mainly be used in the living room and in any other room that you may feel like. The main aim of interior design and decoration ideas while upgrading an old house is so as to bring out a very clear difference, one that clearly stands out for identification. This also helps in giving your house the much needed luxurious touch.

While upgrading your old house, you should ensure that you use the already existing furniture and other items instead of purchasing new ones. However it requires you to be quite resourceful in order to identify the best interior design idea to use in order to achieve an excellent decoration. You can rely on the internet and other resource centers in order to be able to identify the best idea to use. Old furniture is better than new furniture in that the old one has a better sustainability as compared to the new one. As such the old furniture is usually more resistant to damage and breakage.
