How to Make Your Home More Energy Efficient

Since today is Earth Day, I thought it would be good to share some ideas on how to be more energy efficient. There are many things you can do to help make your home more energy efficient. Including our favorite, use interlined draperies in your home to keep the cold and heat out! Read on for more ideas that will help you save money in both the winter and summer months:

Get rid of energy vampires: cell phone chargers, electric toothbrushes, and other appliances still consume electricity even if they are not in use or turned off. By plugging them in just when they need to be used, you can save on average 6-8% of electricity, which accounts for an overall amount of $7 billion nationwide.

Replace Incandescent Bulbs: in 2014, manufacturers stopped producing 60-watt and 40-watt incandescent light bulbs (100-watt and 75-watt bulbs were already phased out). But we’re not doomed to live in the dark. Halogen bulbs, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs offer longer lasting light and are more energy-efficient than your old incandescent bulbs. Since the average home uses 40 bulbs, switching over to greener bulbs is a great way to save on your electrical bill.

Reverse your ceiling fan in winter: ceiling fans are more energy efficient than air conditioners, so if you can make the switch, do so. Secondly, ceiling fans can help keep your home warmer in the winter by simple reversing the fan’s direction to spin clockwise. In doing so, you’ll push the hot air downwards so that any heating that rises will be evenly distributed throughout your home.

Add Insulation to Your Attic: adding insulation to your attic can help seal air leaks and improve your home’s heating and cooling costs. The amount of insulation needed to cover your attic depends on your home’s size and the climate in your region, but you will recoup your money in a couple of years.

Wash your clothes with warm or cold water: 90% of the electricity consumed by your washer is used to heat up water. The next time you put a load in, make sure that you use soap that can be used with cold or warm water and adjust the settings.

Switch to low flow showers heads: the average shower head uses 5 gallons of water per minute, but changing them with low flow options you can reduce your consumption to 2.5 gallons per minute or less.

Buy Energy Star Products: Energy Star products, such as refrigerators, televisions, stoves, washers and air conditioners, meet energy-efficient specifications set by the EPA. Energy Star-qualified appliances use 10-50% less energy than standard appliances and help reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. If you plan to replace an appliance soon, consider getting an Energy Star-certified product.

Window treatments & rugs insulate your home: window treatments and rugs can be strategically used to maintain your home’s temperature. In the winter draw your drapes or shades at night to block out the cold air and keep the warmth in. Interlining your window coverings can add added insulation properties. What is Drapery Stack Back?

Dupioni Silk Drapes
Dupioni Silk Drapes in French Blue

Stack Back is a term most designers know and use when I am helping them with a window project. But it is important for our retail customers to know about this term as well.

Stack Back is essentially the amount of space that a drape will take up when it is pushed opened. To make it easy, we usually calculate Stack Back as 25% of the width of the drape for French, Flat Panels and Parisian pleated drapes. For Inverted and Cartridge pleated drapes, figure 28%.

Solid Linen Drapes in Leather, French Pleat

This can be important if you are limited on wall space on the sides of your window or if you would like your drapes to completely “stack off the glass”. Meaning, that if you do not want to obstruct your view when your drapes are drawn open, you want the drapes to stack off the glass. This may also be important if your drapes are covering a door that you will need to open and close. You will want to make sure the drapes completely stack off the glass.

Stack Back will also help you determine how long your drapery rod should be. If you would like your drapes to stack off the glass, you will want to make sure that the drapery rod is long enough to accomodate the drape’s Stack Back. Stack Back can also give your windows the illusion that they are taller and wider than they really are, which makes your room look larger.

What Pleat Style Do I Choose?

We are often asked by our customers, “Which pleat style do I choose?”. There isn’t a right or wrong answer, it’s a preference. Deciding what you like and which style will work for your room can be overwhelming so we try to break it down by asking a few questions.

What is the style of your room? Is it modern/contemporary? Traditional? Transitional?

How do you want your drapes to hang? Do you want them tailored, holding lines from the top of the drape to the floor? Or do you like a more relaxed look, structured at the top and relaxed or billowing as the drapes fall?

Will the drapes be functional? Will you be opening and closing these drapes often or are they stationary (just framing your window)?

Once we have discussed these specifics with you selecting a pleat style from one of our seven options is easy.

Rod Pocket-typically used in traditional spaces, this pleat style is recommended if your drapes are decorative and you will not be opening and closing them often. Rod Pocket drapery shirr snugly onto the drapery rod and do not move easily. Keep this in mind especially is your drapes are long, you may not be able to reach them in order to move them.

Flat Panel (no pleats)– flat panels are typically used to cover larger spans with less fullness (less ripple), or are used to give a relaxed or unstructured look to your window. This style will need to be dressed down to get an even fullness.

Grommet-clean and uniform by design, Grommet panels are a favorite for modern spaces. Grommets come in a range of finishes and diameters to compliment any window. Grommet panels require dressing to get an even fullness but are structured from top to bottom.

Inverted-if you like a structured heading but a more relaxed body, the Inverted pleat is perfect. The “box” shaped pleat is tailored at the top but looses the lines as it falls towards the floor. This works with modern and transitional styles. This pleat requires no dressing to achieve a uniform look every time.

Cartridge-the cylindrical shape of the Cartridge pleat offers the look of the flat panel but retains the structure of a pleated drapes. This look is clean and modern but can also be used in transitional applications.

French Pleat (Pinch Pleat)-the French pleat holds the lines of the drapery from the three-fold fan at the top to the bottom hem. Easy to open and close this requires little to no dressing and gives a nice uniform fullness anytime. This is our most requested pleat. We recommend it to compliment any traditional setting.

Parisian Pleat-a twist on the traditional French pleat, the Parisian pleat offers the same ease and structure of the French pleat with a slight modern twist. This pleat is recommended for modern or transitional spaces and is a favorite of our designers.

Custom draperies should reflect your style and personality; you really can’t go wrong with any pleat choice. But if you need a little advice, please contact us. DrapeStyle has been in business for over 15 years and everything is still made in the USA.

Do You Have “Sticky” Drapery Rods?

Even if your wooden drapery rods work perfectly to start with, they can begin to stick after a few years, making pulling the curtains a frustrating operation!

There are several reasons for this:

  • The original paint or varnish finish on the rod can wear and roughen with use across the top.
  • An accumulation of household dust on the top of the rod can dry out the wood and makes it slightly ‘sticky’.
  • Changes of humidity can open out the wood grain a little and also cause the rings and rod to catch on each other.
  • If you have a telescoping rod, curtains may get stuck every time you draw them open or closed. The rings will catch on the transition between the two rods.
  • Height is a factor. The longer the drapes, the more weight you have to pull. Are your drapes lined and interlined? The added weight may be making the drapes harder to draw.

Patterned Linen Drapes

But not to worry, there are some easy fixes:

  • Purchase curtain slide tape that adheres to the top of your drapery rod. The tape allows the rings to slide easily. In most cases your drapery rod is high enough and you won’t see the tape.
  • Purchase wands or batons can help draw your drapes. Attaching a wand or baton to the first drapery ring will allow you to pull your drapes more easily.
  • Consider a traverse rod to help with heavy draperies. Traverse rods are perfect for heavier draperies and DrapeStyle offers a variety traverse hardware.

If you have any questions about drapery hardware DrapeStyle would be happy to answer them for you. We have been in business for over 15 years and we love helping our customers design their dream drapes. And everything is still made right here in the USA. For more information please contact us.

Are Linen Drapes a Durable Choice?

Estate Linen Drape with Banding

One of the most common questions I am asked about custom made drapery is “What is the best fabric for my drapery?”. The simple answer is that it “depends”. Linen is becoming more and more popular for our customers in the US and Canada. It seems like we have been seeing linen drapery in more and more catalogs and large retail locations which may have added to its spike in popularity. Linen has been used for drapery for literally thousands of years. In fact, linen drapes have been found in the tombs of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs.

Linen is relatively inexpensive and widely available in a large variety of weights and weaves. Linen absorbs color dies very well which results in deep rich color. When it comes to drapery there are a few features of linen that are important to consider.

Linen can hold some pretty stubborn wrinkles. Over time, when used as drapery, the wrinkles will relax but you may want to use a steamer to expedite the process. DrapeStyle uses great care in folding, packing and shipping our drapery to minimize the wrinkles before our clients receive them.

Manhattan Linen Blended Drape

Linen is a natural fabric and is prone to fading over time, especially when exposed to direct sunlight. Be sure to use a high-quality lining to protect your custom linen drapes from fading prematurely. It is for this reason that DrapeStyle’s linen drapes include Hanes high-quality white sateen lining at no extra cost.

Linen comes from the flax plant and because of this, it is sustainable. Every part of the flax plant is used, it is resilient, it can grow in poor soil conditions, and it needs less water than cotton to grow.

At DrapeStyle we offer a wide variety of linen drapery to choose from. If you are concerned about wrinkles you may want to consider our Manhattan Linen Collection which features a blend of linen and polyester fabric. The polyester component helps with the colorfastness, reduces fading and reduces wrinkles. Vern Yip’s Napa fabric is also an excellent choice for a linen blended fabric. Both blended linens are a great value.

The DrapeStyle way of making custom drapery takes a little more time, costs a little more money but we think it’s worth it. All of our drapes are made from the highest quality materials and handmade to your specifications. If you need any assistance in selecting the perfect custom linen drapery for your home, please contact us and we can walk you through all of the options available.

Why Line Your Curtains?

Curtain linings may seem an unnecessary expense, but there’s more to curtain linings than you might think. Here are five good reasons why it’s a good idea to use them in your next curtain project.

Silk and Linen Drapes
french pleat linen drapes
Sheer Linen Ivory Drapes

1     Windows, particularly windows without double glazing, are areas of great heat loss. Lining your curtains adds an extra layer, and increases the insulation. Thicker curtains will also insulate a room from noise outside, absorb sound, and make a room feel cosier.

2     Adding a lining to curtains will help keep out more light, especially if you use a blackout lining. This is a lining which has had a coating applied which blocks the pores in the weave which normally allow the light to pass through, so no light passes through the fabric itself. Look for a blackout lining which retains its soft characteristics and isn’t stiff and plasticky. Note that blackout lining on it’s own will not block all the light from a window – some will creep around the edges of a curtain or blind. It’s very difficult to actually blackout a room completely! But blackout lining will certainly help get a child off to sleep.

Privacy Lining vs. Blackout Lining

3   Linings also protect your beautiful curtain fabric from fading. The light from south and west facing windows is particularly damaging to fabrics.

Add designer style to a window treatment with colored linings. Some of the most glamorous interior decorator- styled curtains use an alternative fabric, such as a coordinating check or stripe, as a lining, so the curtains look great front or back. Get the look without expense by using a colored sateen lining – most suppliers have a range of colors as well as the standard cream and white. DrapeStyle’s standard lining is white but ask us about other colors available!

5     Finally, curtain linings are not just functional, they add to the aesthetics of your curtain project. Just a simple lining will make your expensive face fabric drape better, and look fuller and more glamorous.

Drapery Length

Hover.  Break.  Puddle.  You probably know these words but did you know they also pertain to drapes and curtains?

Determining the length of your drapes takes a little thought.  First, ask yourself a few questions:

What is the style of the room you are having drapes made for?  Is it formal or casual?

Does this room get a lot of traffic?  You do have kids and pets constantly running through the room?  Will there be traffic going in and out of the door the drapes will be hanging from?

What kind of flooring is in this room?  Carpet?  Tile?  Wood?  What length will look best with your type of flooring?

Finishing Touch

Not only are drapes like “Jewelry”, creating the finishing touch to your room, but they can provide privacy, help with heating and cooling cost, and make your room and windows appear larger.  So it is important that we make your custom drapes the correct size.

What a difference drapes make!

This is the same sized window; doesn’t the window on the left look so much bigger?
dodont

Hang ’em HIGH and WIDE!

This is a trick that designers use to make the space appear larger than it is.  Your room will look taller if your drapes hang 2″ from the ceiling.  Measure 2″ below the ceiling or moulding, to the floor for your finished length.  If your space doesn’t allow you to hang your drapes this high, you can hang the drapery rod 4″ above the window moulding.  Measure from this point to the floor and this will be your finish length.

Next, let’s define a few terms:

Hover or Floor Length-Drapes that meet the floor:

This is the most popular option for customers to select.  Floor length drapes lend a more casual look, and are a more practical option if the drapes will be opened and closed often.  If you are using a drapery rod with rings, measure from the bottom of the drapery rings to the floor to get your finished length.

Salaam Dupioni Custom Silk Drapery

White Linen with Sand Border and Velvet Ribbon Detail

Trouser Break-Drapes break like a pair of trousers-one inch of fabric on the floor:

Trouser break drapes offer a tailored, but more casual look with that designer touch.  Take the measurement from the bottom of the drapery rings to the floor and add one inch.  All fabrics look great with this look.

Minimal Puddle-Drapes “puddle” or gather slightly on the floor:

Beautifully tailored looking drapes with a minimal puddle.  This look adds softness to a room for a more cozy feel.  Take the measurement from the bottom of the drapery rings to the floor and add 1-3″ to create this look.
Double Bordered Dupioni in New Ivory + Cashmere Border

Moderate Puddle-Drapes with a more substantial amount of fabric gathered on the floor:

Take the measurement from the bottom of the drapery rings to the floor and add 3-6″ for a moderate puddle.  This style is more appropriate for rooms with less traffic, where you won’t be cleaning the floors often.  This lends towards a more formal look, and drapes that puddle can really help with heating and cooling loss!

Shown: Milano Lucia with Optional Emperor Tassel in Gold

Opulent Puddle-A large amount of fabric gathered on the floor:

A more formal, luxurious feel.  Measure from the bottom of the drapery rings to the floor, and add 6-8″ for an opulent puddle.  This style is usually used in formal settings, perfect for drapes that won’t be opened and closed often.  For a romantic look, silk fabrics look beautiful when puddled on the floor.

Why Add Interlining To Your Curtains and Drapes?

Drape with Bump

Interlining is a thick, soft blanket-like fabric which is sandwiched between the decorative fabric and the lining. Once you have seen and experienced curtains and blinds that have been interlined, you will want to have all of your curtains interlined!  Here’s a guide to interlining and how to use it successfully.

Flannel

•   Interlining makes curtains look luxurious and drape elegantly.  It’s the key to getting a grand, full, lush look.

•   Lined and interlined curtains absorb more sound, and provide greater insulation from cold and heat, than curtains with just lining.

•   Interlining is not just for curtains. You can also interline Roman shades.

•   Interlined curtains can’t be washed, and must be cleaned by a specialist.

•   Interlined curtains are considerably heavier than curtains that are just lined.  Make sure that your track or pole is able to take the weight.  Metal tracking is a worthwhile investment – plastic tracking may deform and perform badly under the weight of interlined curtains.

•   The interlining is held in place between the face fabric and the lining with vertical lines of loose locking stitches.  This is done by hand and adds an extra process to the making up of curtains, which adds to the cost if you are having them professionally made.

Dupioni Silk Gothic Red

Bump

A thick cotton-based fabric which drapes well.  Bump gives the most body to curtains, and is the type favored by most professional curtain makers.

Flannel

A lighter brushed cotton interlining for small curtains where heavy bump would be out of proportion.  It’s also used to interline swags and tails, pelmets and valances to give them a soft padded look, to match the interlined curtains beneath.

Interlining curtains is highly recommended for that lush, full look. It will also help with insulating your windows from the cold and heat. Take a look at the different lining options available here. DrapeStyle offers interlining on all of their curtains. For more information, or for samples of linings, please contact us.

A Visit from Candice Olson

Scottsdale, Arizona
Scottsdale, Arizona

This week the DrapeStyle team had the pleasure of meeting acclaimed interior designer Candice Olson, at the Kravet showroom in Scottsdale, Arizona.

On a beautiful afternoon, during the design center’s “Desert Design Days”, Candice spoke to the group of designers and business owners for about an hour. She spoke about her education and how it led to her early days as a design apprentice working on commercial projects and then eventually starting her own business. After doing appearances on a local design show, she transition into the HGTV show Divine Design, we all loved.

She mentioned that her major influence right now is nature, as she creates new fabrics for “her look” due to come out next year.  She also mentioned that she is working on designing the interior of a car for a major car company in hopes of attracting the number one buyers of this car, women.

Classic yet contemporary, sophisticated while accessible, these fabrics represent Candice’s love of everyday elegance. Interior Designer, Author and TV star, Candice is considered to be a pre-eminent design authority. DrapeStyle couldn’t be happier to add her collection of luxury fabrics to our designer collection.

Candice’s extraordinary technique, dynamic personality, and sophisticated style have made her a nationally acclaimed interior designer, author, and TV superstar. Candice’s signature style is one she describes as “a fusion of traditional form, scale and proportions, with the clean, crisp, simplistic beauty of modern design.”

Estate Belgian Linen in Ecru with Schumacher Trellis Midnight Edge-Band

What better time than Valentine’s week to celebrate the love we have for our customers! Thank you for providing dozens of jobs right here in Phoenix, Arizona.

DrapeStyle has been making custom drapesroman shades and pillows in the USA from the very start.  Why is this important?  We not only design here, we manufacturer here.  This means that DrapeStyle is able to control the quality of the products it produces.  The custom drapes and roman shades we produce right here in Arizona are of the highest quality in both fabric and workmanship.  I receive about two or three calls a week, from customers wanting to know where our drapes are made.  I’m proud to say that DrapeStyle’s products are made in the USA.

Need more great reasons to buy “Made in the USA” products?

  • When you buy American made products, the proceeds remain in the U.S. economy.  The money you spend then pays the workers that directly or indirectly created the product you just purchased!
  • American manufacturers abide by strict regulations to protect the environment.  These regulations do not exist in most of the top countries manufacturing and importing their goods into the USA causing massive pollution and environmental abuse.
  • Importing countries have little or non-existent regulations or standards for working conditions.  By keeping our dollars in the USA, we are not supporting these horrible working conditions (long hours, exploitation of children, extremely low wages, etc.).
  • Quicker turn around times.  Everything is here so that means it gets made more quickly, and gets shipped to you more quickly!
Custom Outdoor Drapery in Sunbrella Walnut
We feature Sunbrella Fabrics for all of our Custom Outdoor Drapery and Shades.

Nothing at DrapeStyle is “ready-made”.  Custom draperies take a little more time, cost a little more money, but we think it’s worth it.  And most importantly, all of our drapes, curtains, roman shades and pillows are made from the highest quality materials, right here in the USA, by a team of professionals that have an average of 25 years experience.  We hope you have as deep as a commitment to American-made products as we do. Baby It’s Cold Outside-Why You Need Interlining!

With the arrival of the cold winter months, having the heat on all the time is tempting although it could be extremely costly and environmentally damaging especially for home with our double insulated windows.

It’s been said that heating accounts for over 70% of household energy consumption while the cost of running an average three-bedroom home exceeds the average mortgage or rent payment.

This figure is likely to skyrocket as winter comes. For poorly insulated or homes of larger sizes; there are ways to maximize what you’re paying for and keep your home warm without having to spend a fortune on heating.

Add flannel or bump interlining to your drapes to prevent heat loss

With poorly insulated or single glazing windows, constant heating is required to maintain a warm temperature in the home as heat can easily escape through the gaps and even the seal of good window frames can degrade over time.

Flannel lined drapes are a great way to save on energy bills as the additional layer can help retain warmth inside a room during the colder weather. With extra layers of flannel or bump interlining, the thicker lining also adds fullness and body to the drapes which creates a more luxurious look.

Similarly, interlining can actually block heat from coming in during the warmer weather. This style of lining is great for keeping your room at a comfortable temperature throughout the seasons. They also have the added benefits of being blackout and noise reducing.

Flannel or Bump interlining is placed between the fabric and the lining. It adds body and insulation to the drape. For an additional fee, DrapeStyle can add either to your draperies. Order samples here to see for yourself what a difference adding interlining can add to your drapes.

Keep your curtains and drapes shut at night

To maximize the heating, shut your drapes so that the warmth can be retained as much as possible. Most studies suggest 18.5ºC or 65ºF as the optimal temperature for sleeping while temperatures below 12 ºC or 54ºF and above 23.8 ºC or 75ºF is said to be disruptive.

Use door curtains

I’ve always lived in the South West, so I’ve never thought of this, but it makes since if you live in a colder climate. Use door curtains for maximum coverage and keep the cold air out while giving your home a polished look upon entrance. Although useful and convenient, draught excluders are only able to provide a bottom seal whereas door curtains can cover all gaps.

For more information on interlining, see our lining guide or contact us. We are happy to help you determine what would best suit your drapery needs.

At DrapeStyle we have been making our drapery by hand, right here in the USA since 2002. Nothing at DrapeStyle is “ready made” and each drape is inspected before it leaves our production studio.

The DrapeStyle way of making custom drapery takes a little more time, costs a little more money but we think it’s worth it. All of our drapes are made from only the highest quality materials. And, most importantly, each drape is handmade by a team of talented seamstresses that have, on average, over 25 years of experience making custom drapery.

Maybe that’s why our customers have voted us Best of Houzz four years in a row! Please join us in the DrapeStyle experience, you will be pleased.

Fun Crafts for Celebrating National Button Day

National Button Day is observed annually on November 16. Founded in 1938, the National Button Society recognized button collecting as an organized hobby.

I found this great website that has dozens of crafts you can create using buttons. So celebrate National Button Day by making something you can wear or decorate your home with!

These 26 Adorable Projects Will Totally Change The Way You Look At Buttons!

Whether you’re a sewing master or an all-round crafter, you may be one of the many who have a big collection of buttons stashed away. There’s no way that you’ll be able to use them all up on fixing buttonless shirts, so perhaps it’s time to think outside the box a little. These cute and clever button projects will give you some fantastic inspiration with regards to putting your collection to good use in non-traditional ways.

Button Bowl

Button Bowl

This cute and whimsical button bowl is the perfect way to store your little bits and bobs like jewelry or keys. It uses the same method as the cotton thread balls where you use a balloon to create the shape you want, much like a mold, which is then popped and discarded once everything is set and dried. Quick Bookmarks

Quick Bookmarks

Everything you make doesn’t always have to be grand or complicated; you can make something as simple as a button bookmark with a paperclip that you know will be put to good use. It’s a quick and easy craft that can really help your school-going kids. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – IHeartNaptime

Simple Wall Art

Simple Wall Art

I just love this fleur-de-lis symbol, although, of course you can go with practically any image or monogram as long as it’s not too detailed or finicky. The best part about this project is that you don’t have to sew the buttons – you can cheat and just glue them on! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – Makely

Oh Christmas Tree

Oh Christmas Tree

If you have a good range of sizes among all your forgotten buttons, then you may be able to make yourself a few of these charming Christmas tree ornaments. If you don’t have enough greens, though, you can either spray paint them or simply embrace the non-traditional colors. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – ModernMinerals

Beautified Button Shoes

Beautified Button Shoes

Whether you want to vamp up an old pair of shoes, or you found a plain pair on sale for next to nothing, a really cute way to do so is to add buttons. You’ll have to take the longer sewing route with these; when considering all the movement of your feet in your shoes, the buttons may just pop off if you use hot glue to attach them. Fridge Magnets

Fridge Magnets

Ok, so here’s a really nice and easy craft that is so simple, yet people don’t seem to think about it – button fridge magnets! It really is as easy as it sounds: glue magnets onto the buttons and you’re good to go! It adds a fun and playful element of whimsy to your kitchen. DIY Instructions and Project Credit – BigBoxDetox

Leather Cuff

9-leather-cuff

I love all things bohemian, so this leather button cuff is right up my alley. If you can get the blank leather cuff with all the hardware on it then you’re already halfway there, otherwise you’ll just have to attach those yourself. This could make a really interesting belt idea, too! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – LilBlueBoo

Cupcake Art

Cupcake Art

This is just too cute! It’ll perfectly adorn something like a nursery or child’s playroom. After seeing the tutorial, it’s clear that you can paint and button just about any image, but the cupcakes are definitely my favorites! DIY Instructions and Project Credit – BustedButton

Headband

Headband

Making a really cute button headband is actually really easy. The toughest part is just deciding on which buttons to use and how to arrange them – you can cover the entire piece of fabric, or you could just make a little accent part on the side. Flower Bouquet

Flower BouquetThese felt and button flowers are just adorable, and they’re so much fun to make, too! You could get your little ones involved in the project so that they can proudly display them in their rooms, or even give them to their teachers as gifts. Garland

Garland

This Christmassy garland is a real cinch to make if you can do a simple chain stitch. I love the holiday themed colors that can turn your home into a real festive place, but of course, you can just pick any colors for absolutely any time of the year. Easy Autumn Updates

Warm colors

As the weather cools you want to be cozy inside, so use warm colors to make your home feel inviting. There’s a bit of psychology going on here. We favor cool colors like blue and green during the hot months because they help us think of water and shady lawns. So during the cool months, use warm colors like red and yellow to conjure up warm fires hot drinks, and cozy blankets.

Texture

This is a good way to warm up a space with neutral color palette. Touch a piece before you decide on it-it’s the tactile fell various materials, such as rustic wood tables, scratchy woven baskets, bumpy sisal rugs and soft fur blankets.

Pattern

We associate fall with textiles like burlap, fleece an wool not only for their warmth but also for the bold patterns like plaids and stripes that come with them. Plaid is a classic fall choice that turns any room into a fall-friendly atmosphere, whether with throw pillows, blankets or prints on the wall.

Natural Elements

No fall decor is complete without a few pumpkins, gourds and fall leaves. Go outside and hunt around for bits of nature you can bring inside to display on your coffee table, scatter over your dining table centerpiece or put in a bowl on the mantel.

Enticing Scents

Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, chai-these are the scents of fall. Brew cups of tea to get you in the mood, and place batches of potpourri or candles around your home. You can also make a batch of spiced rum or cider to fill the house with the delicious scent.
