Pillow Arranging Made Easy

Thinking about adding a pop of color to your sofa?  Don’t know where to start when selecting pillows?  To some, pillow arranging can be stressful.  But it doesn’t have to be!

As you stroll down the pillow aisles of the home decor stores, you see all the beautiful colors and styles of pillows that you have to have!  But, putting a great grouping of pillows together on a sofa can sometimes be a different story.  A sofa is like a blank canvas and pillows are the pops of color, design and texture you put on it.  Getting it right can sometimes be difficult!

GuideHere are a few hints to get you started.  Start with a couple of anchor pillow, a larger sized pillow for the outside of the sofa.  Moving towards the center, start to select smaller sized pillows, alternating patterns and fabrics.

Pull out colors from around the room to really tie the look together.  Odd numbers are more appealing, so as you work towards the center of the sofa, end with one fun decorative pillow.

Get creative!  Try using a few patterns.  As long as they are in the same color family, they will work.

TropicalUse pillows to make a statement!  If you purchase pillow covers and down inserts you can change the pillow covers seasonally.  You can store the covers neatly in a drawer and use the inserts over and over again!

To maintain the look of your pillows, give your pillows a good shake and punch in the sides to redistribute the feathers in the insert.  Flat pillows look old and tired.

So the bottom line is have fun when selecting your pillows!  Pillows are an inexpensive way to change the look of your sofa without breaking the bank.  Change the look as your style changes, or change the look as the seasons change.  Need a little more inspiration?  See our custom pillow pages for a truly custom look for your sofa.  At DrapeStyle, everything we make is custom made, so if you can dream it, we can make it!

sherwin williams color of the year

“It’s like gray and brown had a baby.”

You might recall that last year Sherwin-Williams chose “Alabaster” white as the Color of the Year. Well, are you ready for their 2017 pick? Drumroll, please: The big winner is “Poised Taupe,” which isn’t hot or cold, dark or light, but something in the middle zone. Or, according to what Sue Wadden, the director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, told the Today Show: “It’s like gray and brown had a baby.”
The company says the hue is a modern take on a timeliness classic and explained their choice in a statement: “It signals a new direction in society’s ever-growing thirst for beautiful neutrals that bring warm and cool tones together to create one irresistibly versatile color.” We have to say, this color definitely strikes the balance between bold and subtle.

“Neutrals are shifting,” Wadden says. “For five years everybody’s talking about gray ― well, they’re warming up.” So, basically, if you want to stay ahead of the trends, this color is calling your name. Even though it’s not a bright red, blue or other in-your-face hue, it’ll make a statement as soon as guests enter your home. If you can’t picture what this would look like in your home, allow us to help.

In an entry way with wood floors and white trim it comes off as traditional and inviting — but we recommend adding a few colorful accents (like the orange flowers seen here!) to keep the space from feeling stuffy or boring.

Meanwhile, if you want to use it in your bedroom, try to stick with light-colored floors and bedding so the hue doesn’t transform your nighttime escape into a dark cave.

And in the kitchen, this dark neutral will pair well with most existing color schemes (so you won’t have to invest in brand new dishes). Here, a rustic yellow and seafoam green hold their own against the gray walls.

Everyone is loving this color, so I thought I would re-post this article from Elle Decor, by Lauren Smith, originally posted August 31, 2016.

DrapeStyle has many fabrics that would compliment this color scheme.  View our fabrics here, or simply contact us for more ideas and inspiration.  At DrapeStyle we have been making custom drapes, Roman shades and pillows since 2002.

If you have any questions about drapery pricing, please feel free to contact us. We love helping our customers design their dream drapes. Happy Labor Day Weekend!

labor-day-weekendHappy Labor Day from DrapeStyle!

Here is a little information about Labor Day, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of the country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend and it is considered the unofficial end of summer.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty U.S. states officially celebrated Labor Day.

Sunbrella is also easy to care for.  Most spills and stains can be cleaned up by spaying on a mild cleaning solution of soap (such as Dawn) and water.  Then simply sprayed off with water and let air dry.

Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances if not removed from the fabric.  To remove mold or mildew, prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and ¼ cup mild soap per gallon of water.  Spray on entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.  Clean entire surface area with a sponge, clean towel or very soft bristle brush.  Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and let air dry.

Neutral DeckAnd did you know you can recycle your Sunbrella fabric?  It’s true.  For over 25 years, Sunbrella acrylic manufacturing waste has been delivered to recycling partners who convert the materials into industrial products such as felt, automotive insulation, and filtration.  You can contact Sunbrella and learn more on how to recycle your pre- or post-consumer fabric waste, including used awning covers, boat covers and upholstery fabric.

Designing an Outdoor Room

Designing an outdoor room is a lot like designing a room inside your home. Design principles such as balance, mood, scale, proportion and unity still apply, with the added challenge of managing unpredictable natural elements. While there are many ways to enjoy the outdoors – lounging in a chair by the pool, sitting among your flowers on a garden bench, watching the neighbors stroll by from the rocking chair on the front porch – there is something special about creating a room that is fully considered from a design perspective, but just happens to be outside.

Here are our favorite ways to elevate your current outdoor space into a beautifully designed outdoor room.

Choose a Focal Point

Ask yourself how you plan to use the outdoor room and let your design revolve around the function. Will you entertain in the space? Play games with your children? Dine al fresco? Once you’ve determined the main function of the space, make that the focal point and choose furniture, fabrics and accessories just as you would for an indoor space. For an outdoor dining room, start with a beautiful teak table with dining chairs upholstered in fade-resistant Sunbrella fabric. A retractable awning over the dining space keeps the room cool during the mid-day heat and can be opened after the sun goes down to reveal the stars above.

Take Control of Light and Shade

Part of the joy of being outdoors is feeling the warm sun on our skin and the wind blowing through our hair. But when the sun gets too hot, a covered porch offers the perfect retreat from the elements. A simple covered porch can be elevated to the status of outdoor room with the addition of retractable power screens. A custom-fit power screen made with easy-to-clean Sunbrella shade fabric allows you to enjoy the comforts of an outdoor living room all year long.

Don’t Be Afraid to Accessorize

Adding accessories is the easiest and quickest way to elevate your current outdoor space into a bonafide outdoor room. Decorative pillows in coordinating Sunbrella fabrics make the outdoor furniture just as cozy as your living room sofa, and stylish lanterns serve as reading lamps at twilight. Be sure to incorporate other accessories that you would normally see inside, such as a Sunbrella throw for when the breeze picks up, a Sunbrella rug for softness underfoot and hanging artwork that bring your personality into the design.

No roof? No problem.

An outdoor space doesn’t have to have an awning or a roof to be considered a room. A large slate patio serves as the blueprint for this outdoor living room in the middle of the backyard. Comfortable love seats are arranged in a symmetrical layout to encourage conversation and a large, stone fire pit provides warmth while performing double duty as the coffee table. Side tables add both interest and function, and marine-inspired lanterns serve as living room lamps when the sun goes down.

Don’t Forget the Drapes!

You may have already painted your room just the right color, found furniture that matches, and hung artwork that complements the color of the room, yet it still feels like something is missing. The room just does not seem to have the look and feel you were going for. It needs more color or more depth.

Drapes to a room are like jewelry to your outfit.

People sometimes underestimate the dramatic effect drapes can have in a room. The right drapes can draw in all of the other design and color in the room and make everything work together. They create a strong focal point and add a touch of refinement and culture to any room.

wide stripe silk drapes

In some situations, simply adding drapes by themselves can be just enough to liven up an otherwise boring area in the room. Here are some ideas to consider when dressing up an area with drapes:

DrapeStyle has over 400 colors and patterns to choose from.

As we mentioned above, drapes can instantly add sophistication and class to a room by introducing a strong presence of color or patterns. Drapes often draw the color scheme out from the rest of the room tying everything together. A pattern or color is the perfect way to break up the monotony of a neutral colored room. Most people prefer to use drapes instead of furniture to add patterns or colors to a room. This allows them to make changes more easily down the road. DrapeStyle offers a range of colors and patterns in silk, cotton, linen and more.

Linens, Silks, Cottons and more.

Because drapes are made from so many different types of material, they are great way to add texture to a room. A thick, heavy drape can be quite dramatic, while a softer lightweight drape can add just the right touch of texture. Using drapes in conjunction with furniture in the room can help liven things up and make the room appear more cultured. Try going bold with suede, velvet or tapestry style drapes to really enhance a boring room.

Pillow 6

Making a statement is easy, and DrapeStyle can help.

Drapes are so much more than just colors and patterns. So much of the statement they make in a room has to do with their length and how they are hung. In most cases, the longer the drapes are, the stronger the statement is. Long, sweeping drapes add formality and drama to a room. Drapes hung in front of windows with other treatments such as blinds or shutters add depth, interest and color.

The right drape can have a huge impact on any room in your home. If you are looking to liven up a room or make a dramatic change, be sure to check out the many different drapery DrapeStyle.com has to offer.

Happy “Thread The Needle Day”

Black background

Happy “Thread The Needle Day”.  Who knew there was such a thing, right?

Although the statement could have several meanings, I’ve decided to focus on the more literal meaning.  Today can be all about sewing or learning to sew.  I occasionally sew, and maybe this will be the push I need to finish some of the sewing projects I have started.  What about you?  Have you ever wanted to learn to sew?

Before investing in a good machine, it might be a good idea to take a few sewing classes at your local craft store.  This will give you a good idea of the time and patience you’ll need to take up sewing as a hobby.

Large Spools twine

Spools of Thread

Keep an open mind.  Know that learning anything new, takes time to master the task and get good at it.  When I was learning to sew, I can remember having to take my seam ripper to many projects because I sewed together the wrong pieces, or sewed on the wrong side, etc.  Practice, practice, practice.  You can inexpensively practice your sewing skills on thrift store sheets and bargain thread.  Start with simple projects so that you can fine tune your skills.  And if you have an experienced friend that you can go to for questions, that can be tremendously helpful.

White background 2

Make things you like.  If  you have a genuine interest in what you’re making, you’re more likely to stick with it.  When I started sewing, I had a cousin that was a toddler.  That poor kid had the cutest, silliest, outfits made for him.  His mother was kind enough to actually have him wear them (or at least long enough to take pictures and send them to me).  Those photos will be great for embarrassing him later in life.

Search the internet.  Pinterest and You Tube have great ideas and how to tutorials.  I always find visuals much more helpful than written instructions.

Now, if you find that your sewing skills aren’t up to par and you need a little assistance for your window treatment project, contact DrapeStyle.  We have been making custom Drapes, Roman Shades and Pillows since 2002.  Our seamstresses have an average of 25 years experience so you are sure to get premium products, quality craftsmanship and a great price.

How To Care For Your Drapes

How should I care for my drapes?  This is a question I get asked quite frequently.

The best answer I can give is, “Let a professional take care of it”.  With each drapery order from DrapeStyle, you will receive instructions on how to care for your drapes.  You shouldn’t try to clean them yourself.  You do not want to launder, wash or dry clean your drapes. Typical household cleaners can permanently damage the fabric.  You should have your drapes professionally cleaned by a company that has experience with draperies.  Not every dry cleaner knows how to properly clean drapes, so do a little research and locate a drapery cleaner so that you can protect your beautiful investment.

Vacuuming and dusting your draperies can help. Regular cleaning reduces the build up of allergens like dust mites, animal hair and dander, and may offer some relief to those with allergies or asthma.  If drapes are touched often, natural oils in the skin can leave residue that builds up and attracts further dust.  Without proper and regular cleaning, dusty and grimy window treatments begin to look dull and discolored, detracting from the beauty of the window or door that they cover.  Regularly cleaning your window treatments prolongs the life of fabrics and keeps colors from becoming dingy.

bordered-linen-drapery-4Simply put; call a professional.  You don’t ever want to launder or scrub your drapes or roman shades.  The best way to care for your window treatments is to call a professional drapery cleaner who will take your window treatments down, remove the metal drapery hooks, have them dry-cleaned, reinstall the metal drapery hooks, and then return and re-hang for you.

Purchasing your drapes and roman shades from DrapeStyle is an investment.  And one of the best ways to maintain the look and feel of your window treatments is regular cleaning.  If you have any questions about how to maintain your window treatments, please contact us, and we would be happy to help you.

“National Sewing Machine Day”

24 Machines

National Sewing Machine Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, is celebrated annually on June 13.   This day honors the invention of the sewing machine.  It is hard to imagine having to sew things together by hand, stitch by stitch.

Skilled cabinet-maker and English inventor, Thomas Saint, received the first patent for a design of a sewing machine in 1790.  It was meant for leather and canvas, was never advertised and no evidence of it, other than his drawings, could be found.   In 1874, William Newton Wilson found Saint’s drawings in the London Patent Office, made adjustments and built a working model.  This model is currently owned by the London Science Museum.

Walter Hunt invented the first American lockstitch sewing machine in 1832 and John Greenough patented the first sewing machine in the United States in 1842.

Industrial use of the sewing machine reduced the burden that was placed upon housewives, moving clothing production from them and seamstresses to large-scale factories.  This also resulted in a decrease in production time which caused the price of clothing to drop considerably.  Of all the inventions created during the industrial revolution, the invention of the sewing machine had one of the largest impacts on the United States.

Today, many people are again becoming interested in the art of sewing and making their own clothing and draperies.  Places like crafts fairs, flea markets, and Etsy sell beautiful sewing machine-made clothes along with numerous other sewing machine-made items.

At DrapeStyle we have been making our drapery by hand, right here in the USA since 2002.  Nothing at DrapeStyle is “Ready Made”.  The DrapeStyle way of making custom drapes takes a little more time, costs a little more money but we think it’s worth it.  All of our drapes are made from the highest quality materials.  And most importantly, each drape is handmade by a team of talented seamstresses that have an average of 25 years of experience making custom drapery.

Let’s Talk Texture. Handwoven Silk.

With Pillow                                                                                                                                                                                                        Silk is commonly thought to be one of the most treasured and luxurious fabrics in the world. The textile is a sign of high class and refined taste, and has been adored by designers and consumers for the entirety of its long and complex history.

Silk fabric was first developed in ancient China, and China remains the top producer of silk today.  India is the second largest producer of silk but the largest consumer of silk.  Silk is one of the strongest fibers.  It can be weaken when exposed to too much sunlight.

Drapestyle carries several types of silk, including beautifully textured, Handwoven Silk.  Available in 18 colors, our handwoven silk is soft with a touch of sheen.

Handwoven Silk is a bit different than Taffeta Silk.  Where Taffeta Silk has a smooth finish, Handwoven Silk is more textured and has slubs.  Slubs are soft thick fabric nubs purposely set for this desired effect.  At DrapeStyle, sateen lining and flannel interlining are complementary when you purchase silk drapes.  This helps insulate your windows during hot and cold months, protects the silk fabric from sun damage, and adds body and fullness to the drape.

Happy Memorial Day from DrapeStyle!

Large Flag

Memorial Day honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.  Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades.  Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations.  Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials.  On a less somber note, many people throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

DrapeStyle to would like to remember and thank those who have served our country. DrapeStyle will be closed on Memorial Day, but will be back on Tuesday, May 31st, to help you with your window treatment needs.

We invite you to look through all of Robert Allen’s beautiful blues.  DrapeStyle continues to carry gorgeous fabrics from several designers and transforms them into incredible custom drapery.

At DrapeStyle we have been making our drapery by hand, right here in the USA since 2002.  Nothing at DrapeStyle is “ready made”.  The DrapeStyle way of making custom drapery takes a little more time, costs a little more money, but we think it’s worth it.  All of our drapes are made from the highest quality materials, and, most importantly, each drape is handmade.  Handmade by a team of seamstresses that have, on average, over 25 years of experience making custom drapery.
