Top 5 Drapery Mistakes

Want that custom look for your drapery but you’re a bit overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Here is a list of things to address when purchasing drapery for your home.

Not Wide Enough

There’s nothing worse than having the sun peak through your drapes and the sunlight smack you in the face when all you want is to sleep. You’ll want to order your drapery at least 1 1/2 times wider than the window you are trying to cover. See DrapeStyle’s formula for figuring width sizes.

Not High Enough

You will want to hang your drapery at least 4′-6″ above the window molding. The trend now is to hang them even higher, very close to the ceiling. This will make your window and your room look larger than it is. Never hang your drapery on the molding. If space doesn’t allow you to hang drapery above the molding, then you may want to consider having a Roman shade made for the window.

Not Long Enough

Purchase drapery that is within 1/2″ of the floor, or longer if you would like a puddled look. When drapes are too short, it just makes the room look off. If you purchased drapes that are too short, you may be able to lengthen them by adding a band of fabric to the bottom. When in doubt, always order longer.

Not Enough Fullness

This relates to flat panels or drapery panels without pleats. Yes, you may have enough fabric to cover your window but does it look like you’ve hung a bed sheet in your window? Add extra widths to your draperies so that your drapes look great even when open.

Wrong Hardware

If draperies are like the outfit to your room then hardware is like the jewelry to your draperies. Don’t skimp on the hardware, make sure the length and scale is appropriate for you draperies and windows. Most of the time the drapes will cover a bit of your window on each side. This will give the illusion that your window is larger than it really is. Now if you’ve got a fabulous view and you don’t want to block any of the window when the drapes are open, you’ll need to purchase a drapery rod that is long enough to accomodate the drapery stack. You’ll also want to make sure you have purchased a sturdy drapery rod and the appropriate brackets to hold the weight of your drapes.
