How to Prevent Sun Damage with Window Treatments!

Sunlight can be hard on fabrics and other materials, causing color fading and ultimate deterioration of the fabric. This is bad news for some window treatments, which are often hung specifically to block bright sunlight from entering rooms and damaging the furnishings inside. While window shades and curtains protect furniture, rugs, and other items from fading, they take the brunt of the damage from the sun. It’s no surprise that window treatments are most in danger of fading and sun damage, especially when hanging from bright, sunny windows. In order to keep your window treatments looking fresh for years, choose window treatments that can stand the test of time.

If your furnishings are near or facing a window, there is a good chance that they may be damaged from the sun’s rays. Protection for your furniture is not much different than protection for your skin. Long-term exposure to sunlight can damage your furnishings similar to your skin. The sun has different effects on leather, fabric, and wood. Our window treatments will help protect not only your furnishings from the sun but yourself as well. They help filter the harsh effect from sunlight, like UV rays.

Natural light is great but can be harmful to your furnishings over time. Direct or even non-direct sunlight can cause fading, discoloration and even damage to fabric. UVA and UVB rays account for the most damage along with heat and infrared energy. Leaving windows unprotected allows UVA and UVB rays to penetrate your home and over time ruin your home furnishings.

Why does the sun bleach fabrics? It’s all down to science. There is water present in all fabrics, and the ultraviolet light from the sun catalyses a reaction between the water and the oxygen in the atmosphere, which produces hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent which works by breaking down the chemical bonds that give dyes their color. As well as breaking down the color of the dye, the sun’s rays can also cause the fabric to become brittle and more prone to breakage.

DrapeStyle’s Standard Lining vs. Blackout Lining

How can you prevent fabric from fading? All fabrics will eventually fade, but there are steps you can take in order to slow the process down:

  • Tinted windows can block around 99% of harmful ultraviolet rays
  • Ensure the curtain track is wide enough so that your curtains can be pulled back from the window during the day
  • Use curtains with a good quality lining; this provides better insulation and helps to protect them from sun damage
  • Use sheer curtains during the day to keep the sun out and allow you some privacy in your home, closing your main curtains in the evenings only

Drapes and curtains are not only great for blocking out the suns rays, but they will also keep hot air out during the summer and warm air in during the winter. Before the heat of the day builds inside your room it is a good idea to close your blinds to block any sunlight and heat that may enter your home.

DrapeStyle has been providing the highest quality curtains and drapes for over 15 years. We are a family company that is committed to providing customers with high-quality service and care. Sleeping in a Dark Room: How Important is it?

Our bodies must rest and recharge in order to keep operating at full capacity. It doesn’t really matter whether we like this or not, there are many important and necessary processes of regeneration that happen at night and this is what good night’s sleep serves for.

How does our modern lifestyle affect our sleep?

For many people, it is completely irrelevant when they go to bed, when they work and when they turn off the lights. Are you glued to your phone or laptop right until you hit the pillow (and maybe even after)? Or maybe, even with the best intentions, streetlights and city lights flood your bedroom. What we all need to understand is that darkness is a necessity for our beauty sleep.

What are the benefits of sleeping in complete darkness.

Still think beauty sleep is just for your good looks? At night our bodies produce melatonin, which allows us to fall asleep, and stay asleep. We produce this hormone the most between 11pm and 3am, and even the slightest ray of sunlight or artificial light interrupts the secretion of this important hormone. Less melatonin in the blood causes fatigue, bad mood, anxiety, hormonal imbalance, poor concentration and many other problems.

Melatonin supports the immune system and protects us from ailments such as heart attacks triggered by stress, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and many other neurological damages and bacterial and viral infections. When you sleep in complete darkness you can expect your levels of melatonin to increase. Proper and regular secretion of this hormone will even slow down the aging process.

How to create complete darkness

We should accept the fact that we are living in a bright world, which means that we need to take some measures to create darkness. For instance, we can turn off the TV and put down our phones well before bedtime and most importantly wear an eye mask to sleep. High-quality eye masks like can provide complete darkness for you to sleep better, no matter where you sleep.

First, we’ll go over why using artificial lighting too close to bed can damage your health. Melatonin helps us to relax and get ready to sleep, but the blue light from smartphones and tablets actually suppresses this hormone. Melatonin lowers blood pressure, glucose levels, and body temperature, which help us to prepare for a restful sleep.

With the proper amount of melatonin in your system, your cortisol levels will also remain relatively low, allowing you to relax and get to sleep. However, artificial lighting actually raises your stress hormones at night, and frequent exposure can cause a plethora of health problems, including excess body fat, weight gain, inflammation, insulin resistance, and heart problems. It can also contribute to insomnia and even affect hormones responsible for the regulation of your appetite.

So, by keeping your room dark at night, you not only will get to sleep faster and wake up feeling more rested, but you’ll also have a lesser risk of developing health problems due to excess nighttime light exposure.

A good rule of thumb is to simply turn off electronics a few hours before bed, and dim the lights in your room. Make it a relaxing environment for sleep so that when bedtime comes, you actually feel like falling asleep.

Even dim light at night can causes issues, though. Chronic exposure to dim light in the evening leads to depressive symptoms in hamsters, such as drinking less sugar water that they normally would have interest in. When researchers took away the dim lights at night, they found the depression went away.

If you have night lights on, lights from your computer or phone, or even a street lamp outside, consider covering them with a blanket or getting black-out curtains for your windows.

Home Office Ideas with DrapeStyle

Today, more than ever, many of us are working from home. Studies have shown that working from home improves productivity, reduces unscheduled absences and improves employee satisfaction.

Is your commute less than 15 seconds? Here are a few tips that might help:

  • Set aside a place specifically for work. You’ll be able to deduct it from your taxes and help you mentally by keeping work separate from your home life.
  • Create a daily work schedule. Defining specific work hours will set limits on your phone calls and emails cutting into your personal time.
  • Make a point to build workplace relationships. With those you work with and business connections. Working from home doesn’t mean you always have to stay at home.
  • Network electronically. Get active in LinkedIn groups that relate to your work, employer, alma mater, past employers, or other interests that you follow.

So going back to the first point, why not make your home office a thing of beauty? Make your work space easy to work in, have the tools you need to make working more efficient. Make your space a place you ENJOY working in. A new desk, a comfortable chair, files to keep organized. And don’t forget your office window! Roman shades or draperies can really add a lot to your work space. Make your space, yours, make it inviting, make it beautiful!

See something you’d like us to duplicate? We can do it. Our seamstresses have an average of 25 years of experience making custom window treatments. There’s probably nothing they haven’t seen or made. You can forward your ideas and pictures to us and we will let you know whether or not we can duplicate the design.

Want to add a trim or banding? We can do that too. For a unique, one of a kind look, let us help you design your dream drapes. Contact us for more information and ideas.

Alternative Closet Door Ideas

If your closet doors need a little updating, or if your space is limited and you don’t have room for a door that swings out, consider adding drapes in lieu of closet doors. This also works well when you have a space that needs a little camouflaging.

Bi-fold doors can be functional, but what if you want to update the look? Or add a little more style to your space? Replacing your closet doors with draperies could be the thing you are looking for. And you will be able to access your clothes a little easier!

Installing the draperies is quite easy.  A drapery rod can be installed on the inside of the closet, on the door jam or above the opening.
The possibilities are endless. Try using a pattern or color to really make the draperies pop. You can use tiebacks to pull back the draperies exposing your well-organized closet.

DrapeStyle has over 500 fabrics to choose from and several hardware styles if you are thinking of adding draperies to your closet doors. You are sure to find something that matches your home decor. Please view our fabrics and order fabric samples to see them in your own in your own home. If you need a little help determining the size of your draperies, we’re here to help. Advantages of Blackout Lining

Blackout Lined Custom Curtains and Drapes
http://www.babybedding.com/

This is a question I get quite often. What is the difference between your Standard Privacy Lining and Blackout Lining?

Either lining will protect your draperies from the sun, making them last for years. It is because of this, we always recommend that you line your draperies.

Blackout Lining
Blackout Lining
Standard Privacy Lining
Standard Privacy Lining

Our Standard Privacy Lining is a thin and flexible. A tightly woven fabric made of 50% Polyester and 50% cotton. It is white in color.

Our Blackout lining is constructed of multiple layers, woven tight to block sunlight in drapes and shades for style and functionality. Made of 100% polyester, it is thin and flexible. Also, our Blackout Lining is not black, it is white so that it will match the other drapery linings in your home.

Blackout Lined Custom Curtains and Drapes
Flannel Interlining

We did a little informal demonstration to better illustrate how much light blackout lined custom drapery eliminate. The following photo is shot on a single window with two linen drapery panels. The drape on the left was made with standard privacy lining, the drape on the right was made with blackout lining. The photo was shot on a hot and sunny afternoon. The difference between the two curtain panels is quite dramatic. When you see how much of the light is blocked by the blackout lining (95%) you really get a better understanding how using quality lined curtains, drapery or roman shades would significantly lower you home’s energy bills and save your interior upholstery fabrics from sun damage.

Standard Lining vs. Blackout Lining

We encourage the use of this lining whenever the application is appropriate. It certainly adds weight to the drapery but if you are using quality drapery hardware, blackout is really the way to go when buying your next pair of custom drapery or curtains.

At DrapeStyle we make each set of drapes to order with your choice of lining. Whether you would like silk, cotton, linen or any other of our custom drapes, you can upgrade the lining option to blackout for only $99 per panel. All of our drapery linings are manufactured by Hanes which has been the leader in manufacturing quality drapery linings for nearly 100 years. Simply select “Blackout Lining” from the lining selection on any of our drapery pages and we will add this this to your drapery panels.

If you need a little help determining the size drapery or shade for your window, we’re here to help. Simply contact us and one of our designers would be happy to help you with your measurements, fabric selections, or answer any lining questions you may have.

What is a Dye Lot?

A dye lot is a record taken during the dyeing of yarn to identify yarn that received its coloration in the same vat at the same time. Yarn manufacturers assign each lot a unique identification number and stamp it on the label before shipping. Slight differences in temperature, dyeing time, and other factors can result in different shades of the same color between different dye lots of otherwise identical production. Although the component elements of a dye lot number are of interest only for internal business record keeping, retail yarn consumers have an interest in ensuring that they purchase a given color of yarn from identical dye lots.

Woven textile fabrics receive their color in various ways. The most common fabrics are either woven in a natural state and then piece dyed or are woven with a combination of yarn dyed and/or solution dyed yarns.

Piece dyeing occurs when the fibers are spun into white or natural yarn and then woven into fabric called greige-goods. After the fabric is constructed, mills then immerse the greige-goods into large tubs or vats where the color is applied to the entire roll. The dyed goods are then dried and finished in preparation for shipping. Typical dye lots will range from 300-800 yards at a time based on the weight of the yarn, the type of yarns used, and the dye tub size. This process is most often used in solid fabrics where the mill wants a broad color range. Although excellent and well performing options, piece dyed fabrics typically have the greatest color variance from one lot to the next versus yarn dyed woven fabrics.

Yarn dyeing applies color after the white or natural fibers have been spun into yarn. Dyeing occurs when the yarns are wound onto cones and placed into a high pressure tube where the color is applied onto and through the yarn through pressure dying. After drying, the yarns are woven into a constructed piece of fabric. Cotton, rayon and linen yarns are often yarn dyed and commonly used for multi colored fabrics such as woven stripes, gingham checks and plaids.

Solution dyeing is commonly used on synthetic yarns like polyester, nylon, polypropylene and acrylic. In this process, color is mixed directly into a liquid solution before being extruded into long fibers and then spun into colored yarns thus making them extremely colorfast and consistent. That is why many outdoor fabrics, such as Sunbrella, are woven with solution dyed acrylic or polyester. This process yields large volumes of yarn so typically solution dyed yarns are used in the warp for both commercial and decorative fabrics. These colored fibers are then woven into finished goods often using yarn dyed goods in the filling.  Color consistency on these types of products is excellent.

During the color dyeing process, the batch of yarn or constructed fabric is assigned an identification number recording the specific color formula it received. Even though the same dyes are used every time, noticeable color variations can occur especially in piece dyeing of finished goods.

What causes color variations in dye lots? Temperature, time, water source and human error all contribute to slight variations between dye lots. The difference can be subtle to extremely visible. Industry standards allow up to a 6% difference in a color variation. DrapeStyle makes every effort to insure that the fabric sample you receive is from the same dye lot as the fabric we purchase for your job. Our fabric vendors have been in business for many any years and they also do everything they can to insure consistency with their dye lots.

Because of these industry standard dye lot variations, it’s important you always purchase enough fabric of the same dye lot in order to complete your window treatments.

So if you are ordering multiple drapes and/or shades for the same room, we strongly suggest that you order them all at the same time to insure the fabric comes from the same dye lot.

If you have any questions about Dye Lots or window treatments, please contact us. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

trinaturkphoto2

Here at DrapeStyle we feature several designers.  One of which is Trina Turk. Her fabrics are bright and bold, creative with a touch of retro.

Over the past two decades Trina’s modern and upbeat outlook has melded classic American design with a California confidence. What began as a women’s clothing collection has organically evolved into a many categories, with California-inspired patterns and pure color leading the way.

trina-turk-outdoor-pillows

Trina Turk Fabric is by far one our favorite lines. Trina Turk is an amazing designer, partly because she knew at a fairly young age what she wanted to do when she grew up, followed her passions, and now she is extremely successful and has evolved what began as a women’s contemporary clothing line into a mini lifestyle brand. Trina studied apparel design at the University of Washington, leading her to work for various companies designing ready-to-wear women’s apparel.
Trina realized in 1995 that her resume wasn’t going to cut it if she wanted offers to design her own line of women’s clothing. Her next step was to launch her own company-selling everything from fabric to home accessories. And within the same year, her products were being sold in major department stores such as Barney’s New York and Saks Fifth Avenue. In 2009 her wholesale sales topped $40 million. Her successes lead to the opening of her own boutiques in major cities around the United States. Those boutiques and her online store are a huge success today.

Trina has drawn constant inspiration from the cocktail party and poolside lifestyle of the desert, which definitely lead to her line of indoor/outdoor fabrics for F Schumacher. Trina Turk Fabric for F Schumacher is filled to the brim with eye-popping colors and patterns that without a doubt will add excitement to any design. Many of which you can view here. The fabric quality is to die for, not to mention how cute it is! Whether you use the fabric for upholstery, drapery, or outdoor cushions, it is destined to be a great accent. Her geometric fabrics are a best-seller and have definitely landed her a place on our list of favorite designers!

Dupioni, Handwoven and Taffeta Silk

The Parker Drape in Pewter / Parchment Banding

Here at DrapeStyle, we sell more silk drapes than anything else. You won’t find better quality silk and exclusive colors anywhere. Our designers are often asked questions about our silk fabrics. Here are a few facts about this stunning natural fabric:

  • Because of its natural protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics
  • An all-climate fabric, it is warm and cozy in winter and comfortably cool when temperatures rise. Its natural temperature-regulating properties give silk this paradoxical ability to cool and warm simultaneously. Silk garments outperform other fabrics in both summer and winter. Worn as a second layer, it warms without being bulky
  • In spite of its delicate appearance, it is relatively robust and its smooth surface resists soil and odors well
  • While silk abrasion resistance is moderate, it is the strongest natural fiber and, surprisingly, it easily competes with steel yarn in tensile strength
  • Silk takes color well, washes easily, and is easy to work with in spinning, weaving, knitting, and sewing

Our designers are often asked to explain the difference between the different types of silk drapery we offer at DrapeStyle.  The three primary categories of are Dupioni, Taffeta and Handwoven, also known as Matka.  All of our silks are imported from India however, there are distinct characteristics that make each one unique.

Silk Dupioni , or Douppioni, is known in the textile industry for its modest sheen and less refined texture. Dupioni is a lustrous silk often woven from two different colors of threads, so that it shimmers or changes color in the light. Dupioni is made from an irregular, rough silk reeled from double cocoons or cocoons nested together, making it necessary to reel them together. An elegant woven fabric made with a tight plain weave, fine warp yarns, filling yarns that form prominent, irregular crosswise ribs. Usually brightly colored, it has a moderately crisp drape, fairly reflective luster, and a nubby texture. DrapeStyle carries a wide variety of Dupioni in both solids and stripes.

Veranda Stripe 9, Grommet Style.

Silk Taffeta is considered a more formal  and luxurious fabric due to its higher sheen and more refined weave. Our Taffeta has a crisp smooth finish that looks elegant in any pleat style. Please view our fabulous Striped Silk Taffeta drapes here.

DrapeStyle’ s European influenced, 100%  Handwoven Silk collection is the new look of silk.  We like to describe it as a  marriage between the elegance of silk and the natural texture of linen.  This combination gives it a unique,  heavy weight weave often used in transitional designs.  In any length, width or pleat style, this updated material has quickly become one of our best sellers. View all of the colors of our Handwoven Silk Collection and see for yourself this beautifully textured fabric.

Happy National Argyle Day!

argyll_web

NATIONAL ARGYLE DAY

This week we celebrate National Argyle Day. Who knew this even existed, right? Here is a little information about the fabric.

Deriving from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyle in western Scotland, the argyle pattern used for kilts and plaids and from the patterned socks (known as “tartan hose”). Worn by Scottish Highlanders since at least the 17th century, is recognized and honored each year on January 8th on National Argyle Day

blue-argyle-romper-setMost commonly referring to the overall pattern made of diamonds or lozenges, the word “argyle” sometimes is used referring to an individual diamond in the design. Layers of overlapping motifs are found in most layouts adding a sense of three-dimensionality, movement and texture.  Typically in the pattern, there is an overlay of inter-crossing diagonal lines on solid diamonds.

The design’s popularity was helped by its identification with the Duke of Windsor, Pringle of Scotland (a luxury knitwear manufacturer and importer).  The duke, like many others, used the pattern for golf clothing on both jerseys and long socks that were needed for the plus-fours trouser fashion of the day.

16 Argyle Projects for Argyle Day

What do you do on National Argyle Day? I really don’t know. But I found a website that came up with some fun projects. Click the link above for some crafty, fun ideas. And please view our website. We don’t carry argyle fabric, but we have many fabrics that would coordinate with your argyle sofa!

In fact, DrapeStyle carries over 500 fabrics that can be made into the drapes of your dreams. You decided on the house with the big, beautiful, panoramic windows. But now what? The windows are dramatic and provide amazing views but can be somewhat of a challenge when it comes to buying custom curtains or drapes. If you visit the typical retailers you are probably not going to find drapery that will cover extra long windows. Most retailers won’t have drapes that go beyond 120 inches. And that’s where DrapeStyle comes in. Everything we make is custom made, so yes, we can make drapes for your windows.           Any width.  Any length. Any fabric.

Do your tall windows offer an incredible view that you don’t want to obstruct? Consider adding sheers to your windows.  DrapeStyle carries sheers in several different colors, style and fabrics so you are sure to find one that works for you. Sheers can add drama and softness to a room, without breaking the bank. Whether you are looking for a classic sheer or something more modern, DrapeStyle has plenty of reasonably priced sheers to choose from.

Another option for adding a little color and pattern to your windows, would be decorative panels. Drapes that do not open and close, they instead are stationary and provide much needed color to the walls.

Need privacy? Consider adding our sateen privacy lining or for a truly room darkening effect, add blackout lining. Perfect for darkening the room when you want to watch a movie or take a nap.

So where do you start? We suggest that you go through our fabric samples and select a few that you like. You will receive your samples within a few days and you will be able to see for yourself how each fabric looks in your home, in your light. Then, check out our measuring guide to determine the best fit for your window. Or, if you need a little help, please contact us. What Is Interlining?

imperial-drapes

It’s finally starting to cool down here in Phoenix (you know, like 60 degrees!) and it has me thinking about insulating windows from the cold.  Here is a little information about how to help with those winter heating costs:

Insulating drapery helps regulate temperature and can dampen sound. All drapery lining will give some degree of insulation, but certain linings are specifically designed for it. They can help save on heating costs by reducing drafts and heat loss during the winter, and can keep things cooler in the summer by blocking heat from the sun. Insulated drapery lining also dampens sound and can help block outside noises.

Flannel interlining will provide a thin layer of insulation between the lining and the fabric.  Available in a neutral color, flannel interlining will help insulate your windows from the heat and the cold as well as add body and fullness to your draperies making them look more full and luxurious. DrapeStyle uses a 100% cotton, premium, heavy-weight flannel interlining.  The flannel is loosely woven to provide a greater insulating factor and dramatically add to the fullness of your custom drapes.  You may choose to add flannel interlining and standard lining, or flannel interlining and blackout lining to your custom drapes.

Bump interlining is particularly effective at thermal and noise insulation. Bump Interlining, or “English Bump” as it is often called is an extremely heavy-weight 100% cotton flannel interlining.  The name “English Bump” refers to its use as the home’s primary insulation in early nineteenth century England.  At more than twice the thickness and weight as our flannel interlining, bump is the perfect choice when sound and climate insulation are required.  Bump is sandwiched between the fabric and the lining.  You may add bump with your standard lining or blackout lining. Because it’s thick, bump is often used to create fuller, heavier looking draperies that have a luxurious feel.

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2017

GREENERY-Pantone 15-0343Pantone Color Institute Logo

A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings.

Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.

Greenery is nature’s neutral. The more submerged people are in modern life, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. This shift is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in daily lives through urban planning, architecture, lifestyle and design choices globally. A constant on the periphery, Greenery is now being pulled to the forefront – it is an omnipresent hue around the world.

A life-affirming shade, Greenery is also emblematic of the pursuit of personal passions and vitality.

What is the PANTONE Color of the Year?

A symbolic color selection; a color snapshot of what we see taking place in our global culture that serves as an expression of a mood and an attitude.

Greenery Color Pairings

Nature’s neutral, PANTONE Greenery is a versatile “trans-seasonal” shade that lends itself to many color combinations. As displayed in the 10 palettes below, Greenery is paired with neutrals, brights, deeper shades, pastels, metallics and even the enduring presence of PANTONE Color of the Year 2016, Rose Quartz and Serenity. These palettes easily cross over fashion, beauty, product and graphic design applications.

Flat Patterned 2 Roman Shades
Relaxed Linen Large Roman ShadeOne of the most common questions I get is, “Why are Roman shades so expensive?”  Windows by Melissa put it in the most excellent way:

“Why are roman shades so expensive? Because it takes about 80 steps to create one and you have to do each one right. If you so a step wrong and don’t realize it till 20 steps later you have to undo all the previous steps! Also, roman shades have a lot of components.  Roman shades are made up 14 different pieces and it requires at least eight different tools to create it including a sledge hammer and saw. Additionally, mistakes aren’t easily remedied on roman shades. If a mistake is made, more often than not the shade has to be recreated entirely. If the dowel cases are sewn on incorrectly and a seam of top stitching has to be removed it leaves unsightly needle holes in the fabric and the fabric must be replaced. There is so much room for error in the construction of a roman shades. So the slow process and tremendous amount of detail and focus required to make it is why the labor charge is so high on a roman shade.”

Happy Thanksgiving!

This week we will celebrate Thanksgiving here at DrapeStyle, in Phoenix, Arizona. On the Monday before Thanksgiving, everyone brings a food item to share for lunch. We do this on Monday so that we can enjoy the delicious leftovers all week!  We line up all of the food offerings on a table outside the break room, set up extra tables in the break room, and we fill our plates (some of us more than once!) with delicious food. It is rare that we all get to eat together at the same time, so it’s a wonderful way to start our long holiday weekend.
