Custom Drapes Online

Most people think that if they are looking to buy custom drapes online they are going to have to give-up service.  After all most online drapery retailers are just huge call-centers that churn and burn sales people every couple of weeks.  You may have a catalog in front of you from one of these retailers and call their call-center to find that the person on the other end of the phone doesn’t know much more about custom drapes than you do.

At DrapeStyle, things are different.  We’ve had the same Team of Sales Designers for over 7 years.  They are not commission based and they aren’t trying to sell you anything that you don’t need.  In fact, our Designers are more concerned with having a happy Customer than making a sale.

Our Designers are also “real” Designers who have gone to school to learn there trade.  After School they have worked in Design Firms where they have actually met with Clients, prepared drawings and specified custom drapes for extra long windows, wide window and really every kind of window you can imagine.  We have to pay our People more than what a “call-center” would have to pay their People but we think it’s worth it.  As a matter of fact, we know that it’s worth it.  Our Designers are true “consultants” and they are very capable of making sure that when you order your custom drapes you are getting the right size, pleat style and lining option, including blackout lining, that your will work in your living room, bedroom or where ever.

Elegant White Silk Drapes with Sheers

Sometimes less color is can be more elegant than more color.  We made these very classic white silk drapes for a Client and layered them with sheers behind them.  The look is more classic contemporary with French Pleats and no puddle.  The drapery length is just above the floor which adds to it’s tailored and contemporary look.  We also added simple white silk roman shades that compliments the silk drapes.  This is a relatively small living room and the light colors and bright windows make the space look larger.

Although the predominant color of the drapes are white, by adding the sheers our Designers have created interest and depth by mixing the textures of the fabrics.

Sometimes white can create an elegant and classic look. We layered these White Silk Dupioni Drapes with White Sheers.

Both the Sheers and Drapes are French Pleated and we have added a white silk top-band to the Sheers.  The hardware is classic iron.  Like this look?  Call one of our Designers and let us show you why for over ten years DrapeStyle has been the best place to buy custom drapes and curtains online.

Elegant Drapes

When you are measuring for your custom drapes you may want to consider adding 4-5 extra inches to the length as a puddle.  A Designer Secret for creating more elegant drapes is to add a puddle which spreads our on the floor beneath the drape.  A puddle will also give the illusion that your windows and ceilings are taller.  At DrapeStyle we often use drapes that puddle on the floor in our photo-shoots as they are more traditional and elegant.  If you need any help in measuring for your draperies, even if you have extra long windows please give one of our Designers a call and we can help you to determine the perfect length for an elegant puddle.  We would be happy to provide you with free fabric samples along with great advice.  For over a decade, DrapeStyle has been the very best place to buy custom drapes online.

Living Room Drapes

One of the common themes that we are finding is that more and more of our Clients are converting their living rooms into more of a Home Theater Room.  They are going with the larger flat panel televisions and want to make their living rooms as “Theater Like” for those afternoons where they want to crawl up on the couch and watch a movie or a game.  We always try to suggest to them when considering their living room drapes to upgrade to our Blackout Lining option.  Blackout is a synthetic lining which blocks out about 98% of the light from penetrating through the drapery fabric.  The result is that blackout helps to convert your typical living room into a Home Theater Room.  And, maybe the best part is that you can upgrade to blackout lining for only $99 per panel – any size panel, at DrapeStyle.

One other added benefit is that the blackout lining is going to help protect your all of your interior fabrics from sun damage and fading, including your carpets.  And, if that is not enough, Blackout will also help reduce your energy bills by providing additional insulation.  If you are buying drapes for you living room, you really should give Blackout lining some serious consideration.

Making Some Extra Long Drapes Today!

We’re making some really long and really wide custom drapes today for a Client in New York.  These are Linen Drapes in our Hotel Collection and they are just over 15 feet long and 9 feet wide.  These are really big drapery panels and adding the trim is not an easy task.  The trim is hand cut out of silk fabric, tacked to the linen drapes and then sewn on.  These are true Artisans at work!  Notice how she is using a straight-edge to guide the silk trim on the linen fabric.

Custom Drapery Reviews on Houzz

It is really amazing that just 5 years ago websites like Houzz and Pinterest didn’t even exist.  Today, Houzz has grown to be the premier destination for all things related to home furnishings just has Pinterest has to fashion.  One of the many things that Houzz is great for is reviews.  We’ve been getting some great reviews from our Customers, both Designers and Homeowners and I thought we would re-print some of them here.  Please excuse us for bragging on ourselves, but sometimes we just have to do it.  After all if you are looking for Custom Drapes you are probably going to visit Houzz at some point.  Thanks to all of our Clients for entrusting us to make your custom drapes!

This is the first time I used an online company to purchase custom drapery. I was apprehensive about the process given the fact that measurements for this type of project need to be accurate. The company was very responsive in getting fabric samples out to me quickly. I contacted them a few times to make sure that I had the correct dimensions on my order and they were very helpful in walking me through the process. The quality of the finished product is excellent as well as the customer service and the drapes fit perfectly.

My drapes were custom made by Drape Style. The quality and workmanship was superb. The attention to detail was incredible. The packaging of the finished product was carefully done which prevented any wrinkling/damage to the fabric during shipping. The quality o the drapery hardware was also excellent. I could not have been any more pleased with this order. I also appreciated that they were made in America.

I love my drapes! They are exactly what I wanted and were beautifully made. They’re in eggshell silk dupioni, interlined, and blackout lined. Custom length, custom width, and they even honored a special request to have the drapery rings sewn in. The quality of the fabric and craftsmanship are terrific, and the fabric color matched the sample perfectly. I just ordered a roman shade for an adjoining room and am sure to use them for drapes in all our home decorating projects. Thanks Drapestyle for a job well done!

I can not say enough good things about this company. We recently finished remodeling our home and needed that final touch to bring it all together which meant getting some amazing drapery for the windows. I looked at many companies but nothing compared to the fabric options, quality and cost that Drape Style offered. What you get for their price point is amazing to what you can pay elsewhere. Our drapes are gorgeous and made from designer fabric with a very nice weight to them. It is the first thing everyone notices when they come to our home and probably my most favorite detail to the home. Good drapery really does bring your house all together.
I worked with one of their designers who came out to my home for a consultation and she was amazing. Come armed with so many amazing fabric options and was forthcoming with very good advice.
As well their website is great for easy navigation and purchase of drapes or shades if you just want to go for it on your own. Which I had done previously for our dining room with no regrets. I highly recommend Drape Style to anyone that is looking for dine drapes and shades.

I absolutely love my drapes from Drapestyle! They were made exactly as I asked and beautifully done. I bought 2 sets. The quality is amazing and after I got them, I had them make coordinating pillows. The fabric choices are that California contemporary that makes my home stand out from my friends! Thanks, Drapestyle ;-)

I was having a party and needed drapes to complete my family room refurb. With not very much time on my hands, I turned to Drapestyle. Lisa was above and beyond helpful with everything from advice, color picks and samples. She took care of my order from start to finish and did not tire, (I think) of my endless phone calls and questions. The drapes came in enough time and looked gorgeous. I was not expecting the unbelievably high quality of craftsmanship for the price. I had been locally to price compare. I would definitely by again

Quality Custom Drapes Without Compromise

At DrapeStyle we are always trying to find ways to get our silk and linen drapes as competitively priced as possible for our Customers.  We are driven to get you the finest quality custom drapes at the absolute best price and value possible.  Our reputation is and always has been as a leader in very high quality.  When most People think of DrapeStyle they think “Quality” but it’s important that they also think “Value”.  Now, we will never be the “Low Price leader“, that is just not our style.  I think we can be the “Value Leader” though.

In the world of custom drapes we have a bunch of options, especially Online.  So consider the following.  If you are looking for new custom silk Dupioni drapes in a pretty standard length and width, let’s say you want them to be 120 inches long and 36 inches wide.  You like a French Pleat.  If you were to buy those silk drapes from DrapeStyle you would be looking at spending $380 per panel with standard lining and interlining.  You could upgrade to blackout lining for just $99 more per panel.

Now, that same drapery panel at The Shade Store would cost you just over $1,000.  Both Panels would be made to order in the USA to your exact measurements.

If you looked at Ready-Made Panels which are not made in the USA you could look at Restoration Hardware.  Restoration Hardware sells their Thai Silk Drapes which are lined but not interlined for $509 per-panel, and that is On Sale.  Now, those panels are a little wider at 46 inches per panel but they are using a “two-finger” French Pleat which requires less fabric.  If you wanted a Two-Finger French Pleat from DrapeStyle the panels would also be 46inches wide each.

So, there you have it.  At DrapeStyle, our Made to Order Silk Drapes are about 25% less expensive than Restoration Hardware’s Ready Made Panels and we are about 60% less than The Shade Store.

If that is still not in your budget you should keep an eye on THE OUTLET by DrapeStyle where you can find premium quality custom silk and linen drapes in overstock fabrics for as much as 75% off our regular prices!

When you do your homework we are very confident that we really are the best value in custom silk drapes, period.  Maybe that’s why Interior Designers in the US and Canada have been buying from DrapeStyle for over a decade.

* All prices were as of May 6, 2014.

Amazing Seamstress’s

Our Industry is dying.  Yes, it is really dying.  We work in a creative Field of talented Men and Women who have been mastering the will of complicated machines to create works of Art for decades.  They are not making them anymore. Not making the machines and not making the Men and Women.

The amazing People who make your Drapes don’t text or Instagram.  They don’t have “Smart Phones” of Facebook Accounts.  They work in the world of Art and Science.  They take rolls of fabrics and bend and fold them.  They cut them and steam them.  Finally they sew them and fold them.  Iron them and hang them.  The end result is often “Perfection” the way so few of us get the opportunity to know.  Perfection comes from mastering a skill that very few ever can, and even fewer even try.  These Men and Women are true Artisans and Masters of a dying Craft.

So, what of our Future?  Who will take their places? Who will work these machines?  Once these machines were cutting-edge technology.  To many of us they still are.  Like the People who run them they are 2/3 iron and 1/3 fluid.  They are 100% capable.  They are 100% dependable.  And, they are beautiful work of Arts.

We are blessed to have the People we have.  They will not be here forever and there are very few who are learning their Art Form.  We make drapes of silk and linen and, in doing so, we are trying to keep an Art-form alive.

Whether you are looking for Custom Silk Drapes, Custom Linen Drapes, Extra Long Drapes or any other Custom Drapery Style, we at DrapeStyle think that we are simply the best place online to buy custom drapes.

Thank you for supporting our efforts.

Silk Drapes

One of the most common questions that we get at DrapeStyle is about our different silk fabrics.  We offer three types of silk, all of which are perfect for making beautiful silk drape but each have slightly different characteristics.  All of our Silks are 100% natural silk fabrics.  They do not contain polyester or other fibers that are often woven into silk.  When Polyester is woven into Silk it obviously reduces the purity of the silk and ultimately it’s value.  On occasion we will offer a “Silk / Linen Blend” where fibers of silk and linen are blended together.  These are fairly common fabrics and have some very unique qualities that many Designers like.  For now, we are just going to describe our two primary silk fabrics.

Silk Fabrics are woven from raw silk that is produced from silk worms.  The vast majority of raw silk production comes from China where they have been harvesting raw silk for thousands of years.  About 200 years ago some raw silk production began to migrate to Thailand.  Thailand is now a fairly large supplier of Raw Silk to the Global Markets and is considered to be “decent” quality.  Most of Thailand’s premium quality silk stays within its own Country where it is used for silk textiles, primarily clothing.

Most experts would agree that the finest Raw Silk in the World is still produced in China.  Once the raw silk is produced, however, it is shipped to India to be woven into fabrics.  Although China is the World Leader in Raw Silk Production, they do not weave very much silk fabric at all.

When India receives that Raw Silk from China it is graded and then woven into a variety of Silk Fabric types:

Dupioni Silk Fabric:  Dupioni Fabric is a bit less refined than Taffeta Silk and is used word-wide in textile manufacturing.  The Dupioni Fabric can either be hand-woven or machine-woven and is distinguished from it’s close relative Taffeta Silk by the signature “Slubs” which are present on the fabric.  These Slubs are just the natural build-up of raw silk that is present when the raw silk is spun into silk thread.  When silk thread is destined to be woven into Dupioni Fabric than the Slubs are left in the thread which is then woven into fabric.  The result is a fabric with numerous bumps created by the slubs.  Silk Dupioni is used in garment production all over the world and is the primary fabric used in home furnishings including upholstery and, of course, silk drapes.

Taffeta Silk Fabric:  The primary difference between Dupioni and Taffeta fabric is that the Slubs are removed prior to the fabric being woven.  The extra step of production takes the raw silk thread and refines it removing all of the slubs so that all of the thread is uniform in thickness and quality.  This extra step also gives the thread more sheen and makes it a bit stiffer than Dupioni.  When the Taffeta Thread is woven into Taffeta Fabric the result is a cleaner and crisper fabric with a higher sheen.  Because Taffeta goes through more “processing” it also generally costs about 20% more than Dupioni.  Silk Taffeta is very often used for the manufacturing of wedding dresses as well as home furnishings.  Because of the sheen and texture of Taffeta it is also a very popular choice for making Taffeta Silk Drapes throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

Belgian Linen Drapes

Once in a while we like to just re-introduce one of our styles.  This afternoon we were looking at a brand new pair of amazing Estate Linen Drapes that were just finished and I realized that we haven’t really talked about these lately and they are one of our best selling drapery styles.  In case you have not seen the Estate Linen Collection you really need too.  These Custom Belgian Linen Drapes are softer and thicker than our classic linens and a bit heavier.  The weave is little more relaxed and they hand so beautifully.  Like any natural linen, they are going to be prone to wrinkles but a little time hanging on the rod should take care of them.  If you need too you can hit them with a little steam which will also make the wrinkles relax sooner.

We love to dress these linens up with edge-bands, borders and ribbons.  For a limited time you can add a solid linen contrasting edge-band at no additional charge.  None, zip, zero, so hurry.  If you want one of our Designer Fabric edge-bands we are going to have to up-charge you for those but the solids are on the house for as long as we can afford it!

Like with Silk Drapes, our Linens are a natural fabric so you may want to take advantage of our blackout lining promotion and upgrade the lining to blackout to both protect the fabric, give you more insulation and privacy.  For $99 bucks per panel the blackout upgrade option is the easiest decision you will make when ordering your new drapes.

If you need some help selecting an edge-band, border or trim, please call one of our Designers.  They love creating unique and one-of-a-kind creations for our Clients.

Cartridge Pleat Drapes

Yeah!  DrapeStyle has it’s very first Patent!  In the drapery business we have always just sort of done things they way they have always been done for a hundred years, but not at DrapeStyle.  When we make a Cartridge Pleat Drape we basically make a cylinder or a cone.  The inside of the cylinder is empty and just about every custom drapery manufacturer in the world will stuff that cylinder with paper or pillow-fill or something else to keep the cartridge pleat, well, shaped like a cartridge.  When you “stuff” a cartridge pleat or a goblet pleat with paper or whatever you run into a couple of problems.

The first problem is that if you crush, pinch or otherwise misshape the pleat they are not going to “bounce back”.  As a result you get pleats that are either misshapen, crooked or just not, well a cartridge pleat.

Problem number two, is that when you fill the pleat with “material” you leave little spaces in there.  Little dark spaces.  And, we know who likes little dark spaces, right?  Yes, little crawly creatures.  They like to move into cartridge pleats and build themselves little nests.  And, once they have a nest they like like to fill that nest with little baby crawly things.  Before you know it you have a little crawly thing condo happening in your drapes Cartridge Pleats.  Not at all what you had planned!

So, introduce the DrapeStyle Solution to the little crawly thing happening in your Cartridge Pleats.  The Pleat Plug.  Yes, this little device may seem innocent enough but it is the answer to colonies of little crawly guys forever.  Plus, with the new Pleat Plug Technology with your Cartridge Pleated Drapes or Goblet Pleated Drapes you now end up with perfectly formed pleats that will last the lifetime of the drape.  And, DrapeStyle gets themselves a Patent for “Drapery Technology”!!

Custom Drapes, Value Pricing at DrapeStyle

In our never-ending quest to remain the leading Online Custom Drapery Retailer we have changed our pricing method a smidgen.  We call it “Value Pricing” and here is what we have done.  The vast majority of our Clients don’t really need extra long or extra wide custom drapes, they need the “standard sizes”.  When we say “standard size” we mean 84 inches to 105 inches.  About 90% of our Customers would fit into those drapery lengths and we want to be sure that we are as aggressively priced as possible.  Going forward, on the majority of our draperies you will not be charged anything extra for your exact length from 84 to 105 inches.  So if you need a 99 inch custom drape it will cost the same amount as a 102 or 84 inch panel.  This should also help if you really need a 96 inch panel but would like a little more fabric to get that “puddle” on the floor.  Now you can add a 4-5inch puddle and pay the same price.  We really should call this “Puddle Pricing!”.  We really hope this new pricing helps you extend your budget a bit and get the luxurious custom drapes in silk and linen that you want, at the length you want without having to resort to “ready-made” panels.

Best Places to Buy Roman Shades Online

It seems as if there are new sources of Custom Roman Shades popping-up online all of the time.  We did a little review of the pricing from each supplier and thought we would put them all into a nice little cheat sheet for you.  It is important for us to be as competitive as possible in our quest to provide our Customers with the best value in custom drapes and Roman Shades.  Whenever we see that we are not competitive with any of the products that we sell, we try to dig in and determine, “why?” and how do we fix it.

Here is a recent review of Roman Shade Pricing that we completed.

Our first comparison is for a Tailored or Pleated Roman Shade Style.  We selected a Solid Linen Fabric with standard privacy lining.

For our next comparison we looked at a Flat Roman Shade Panel with Blackout Lining, also in Linen Fabric.  We were suprised that Restoration Hardware did not offer a Silk Roman Shade Option.  Here are the results for the Flat Roman Shade Option.

Combining Drapery Valances with Hunter Douglas Silhouettes.

So, we don’t really promote our Valances very often but we really love these that we did for a Client in New Jersey.  Valances can be such a great way to add a decorative detail without adding “too much” heavy fabric or drapery.  The Designer and Our Client decided to go with Hunter Douglas Silhouettes Soft Roller Shades on all of the Windows.  The Silhouettes are fine but can be very, very, shall we say “bland” when they are by themselves.  So, the Designer specified a Custom Window Valance Treatment to go over the top of the Silhouettes.  This gave the Client the best of both worlds, they wanted the privacy and simplicity of the Silhouettes with a little more customization and detail that we were able to provide with the Valances.

We made the Valances in Pebble Dupioni Silk, Lined and Interlined with an Inverted Pleat.  We added our Windsor Braid as the decorative element to the edge.
